not only is it common ... in my opinion, it should be the only way you build your set ... why buy a full set of irons if you can't hit them all perfectly? again, imo, you should put your bag together club by club.

personally I think the combo set is the way to go

That's pretty close to what I bought last year (VR mix), and I really dont think I could be any happier. I went 3-5I full cavity, 6-7 forged split cavity, and 8-PW forged blade. I think it's truly a killer combination, they work well together. Though the topline is thicker in the full cavs than in the blades, it progresses nicely through the set with the split cavs bridging the gap well. In fact, I'm so happy with the VR full cavity 3I, when I play my MX-300s, I usually keep the VR 3I in the bag (MX-300 set is 4-GW). It's not that hard rotating back and forth between the two sets because the MX-300 sets up almost identically to the VR forged split cavity. But I digress.... Sorry

I'm a big fan of the mixed set. I think it's definitely becoming much more common, and I recommend it to anyone that's making significant strides in their game. It gives you flexibilty if you ever outgrow any single part of the set (or if you decline, I guess you can go the other way with that as well ) For someone who plays less consistently, I say stick with the full set of the more forgiving club. It just depends on what you're doing at this time, in my mind.

Mine are not that mixed.......just in......PowerBilt Air Foil (Hollow w/ Nitrogen) 4 - PW + SW (cavity back) with Regular Graphite shafts.
They will pair with my Nickent #2 & #3 3DX hybrids.

They will replace my Callaway Fusion wide-soles, 3-PW. I traded in my old Callaway fusions for a new set of the wide-soles in Dec.....but never got the feel for them.

I hit the PowerBilt irons for the first time last night at the range......tremendous difference. The Callaways have a stiff shaft and the PowerBilts are Regular. The PowerBilt club heads are very similar in size & shape to the Callaway FT. Trajectory is straight down the middle with about 10 yards extra distance.

If I had the cash I'd get fitted for below like an above poster:
4-7i-Titleist 710.CB's
8-PW-Titleist 710.MB's

I don't consider 7 a short iron and would want some forgiveness on it. So I'd start the musclebacks from 8 on.

Agreed!

And let me know how you like that 3I. I've been smashing mine lately (in a VERY good way). It has been absolutely beastly.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
