I have a 9ft long roll out green, which I haven't been overly excited about. Do most people just putt on their living room carpet or something more sophisticated?

I have an artificial putting green in my backyard

That's not fair...

but I live on a golf course and I have a real green in my backyard.

I don't currently have anything. I'm looking for a large mat I can buy for this winter. Ideally it'd have a smaller hole (or at least an insert to create a smaller hole) and at least 9 to 10 feet of surface. It might be nice to mount a laser to it to really check alignment.

XBucky,

A friend gave me the Boomerang as a gift. I like it so much, I'm currently inquiring about stocking them in the store. It's cheap, it's a very fast surface, and you never have to retrieve golf balls. I love it! http://www.boomgolf.com/

XBucky,

That looks excellent.

I've e-mailed them to see if they ship to NZ I currently use a 9ft long putting mat, but it's not the best in the world..!!!

i personally dont recommend putting on carpet, at least anything remotely thick. it reeked havok on my game a few years back after a long, cold winter. the next spring i had no feel, no distance control, and lost anything remotely close to "touch."
now i only putt on carpet to practice alignment and a consistent stroke. for me it can only be about that.
