I am a college student who was recently accepted to a Study Abroad Program in the Fremantle/Perth area for Spring 2011. I have read that there are plenty of nice courses in the area. As it will be summer/fall in Australia, I would love to travel and play as much as possible.

Does anybody have any recommendations of courses? I have looked at Lake Karrinyup, Joondalup, and a few others online and they look very nice. Another question I have is would they be able to work out some temporary membership? I don't know if I have enough spare cash to spend 60-100 dollars per round twice a week.

Any other advice or recommendations on the area (nightlife, dining, etc) would be greatly appreciated.

If Perth is anything like Adelaide, you don't need to spend more than $30 to play a really good course. Public, of course, but not all the best courses are snobby private jobs. If you get the chance to come over to Adelaide I can recommend quite a few.

I can recommend a couple in Victoria as well, but as I've never been to Perth I can't really help with any specific courses. But just ask some of the locals, they'll know where to play!

Hey man where are you studying and staying while you are in perth?

There are many nice courses around perth, however most of the good ones are limited to private membership. I think your best bet would be to email heaps of different clubs around perth and explain your situation as most clubs require you to have Referees/contacts to join a club.
I am a member at Lake Karrinyup, but to join there is so difficult as membership places do not open up very often. the only reason i was able to join as i could join as a junior then get through that way.

here is a list of good private clubs(I think there are a few that have waiting lists though):
Melville Glades
The Vines
Lakelands-i'm pretty sure they are always accepting members and is not overly expensive.
Nedlands golf club
Mount Lawley golf club
Cottesloe golf club
Hartfield country club

As for Public Courses that you can just rock up and play on weekdays and book for weekends:
Wembley public golf course- 2x18's that are about $25-30 to play-Probably the best public course with Burswood
Burswood golf course

Some other decent hits:
Araleun
Collier park
Hammersley

In summary I think your best bet is probably Lakelands as it is decent course and not expensive with probably the best chance of getting membership.

For Nightlife:
Northbridge in the city is the main hot spot for nightclubs etc. Leederville and Northbridge have a great selection of restaurants. Perth is known as a city with not fantastic nightclubs compared to other places. If you were able to tell me where you are staying i could give more information on where things are in relation to your accommodation.

Hope all goes well for you iturn463.

Micheal has written a great post about Perth.

I agree will alll he has put in the post and would also recommend you visit another golf forum called "Ozgolf"

It uses the same format as this one and there are many golfers from Perth on it.

We have regular golf days out and most are members of the course that have been mentioned.

The guys range from early twenties to mid forties and handicaps from 3.5 to 27 ( most are 10-20 ).

Have a look and send a post on Ozgolf ( just tell them Topdog recommended you to post here for info and help).

They are a funny bunch , but very good at heart and all the golf days are great fun.

Enjoy Perth and have fun.
