All,

I was talking to some of my friends today at work.....& we decided to skip out at noon & go play some golf. I didn't have my clubs in my car but one of my friends said I could use his backup clubs.

I'm a 20 handicapper but both my friends play to about 5 handicaps. My friend's backup clubs were Titleist DCI 962s. I said to myself...."old sh*t" I'll never be about to hit these clubs. Then we get to the course my buddies talk me into playing from the tips with them. The tips are slightly more than 7,000 yards. I was expecting a long afternoon on the course.

But unexpectedly something happened....I hit my share of bad shots...but I still finished with a 88...which is a great score for me. Most of my iron shots were struck good & I was getting some amazing feedback which is something I normally don't get with my clubs. Also, playing from the tips..I think it made me use better course management than I normally do......all in all.....I played with blades & from the tips & had one of my better rounds.....

Has this ever happened to you guys? Also...why do you think something likes this happens? Maybe luck..but I don't know...but it was better than being at work!

Two things come to mine....

One, if you can hit the ball, playing from the tips can keep you out of trouble off the tee, and that can really help your score.

Two, when faced with the challenge of playing "over your head" you can really bare down and give maximum attention to each shot....even if not embarrassing yourself is your motivation, a sharp focus can maximize your game.

Always nice to hear about someone testing themselves and having a good result....congrats.

i'm just wondering why you'd say ''old $h*t'' instead of ''oh $h*t.'' seriously though, blades will definitely make you swing the club well, or you'll be spraying balls all over the course.

Titleist DCI 962 are definitely not a blade, they are a cavity back, and one of the best that's ever been made... classics. I have a set buried in a closet somewhere, and they served me very well. They are easy to hit and reasonably workable.

All,

as above, DCI 962 are hardly blades... but congrats on your good round ::)

Cheers, Allan

you had one of the good days that makes you think it's worth playing golf.
I had a oh $h*t moment when I could hit my driver off the fairway.

Ask him if you can borrow the clubs for awhile, they'll help your ball-striking and give you a lot more feedback than your current clubs.

are these what you played with?

they look kinda like muscle back irons, nice.

Compared to the irons he is playing in his signature, i think these are blades

So you were in this situation:
Odd course and longer tees
using foreign clubs
more focusing on course management

I guess i was in this same situation yesterday. I was playing at the 70th best rated course in the UK - The Oxfordshire.
The course is much longer than my home course, so i was not regularly taking wedges into par 4s. I have been hitting the ball great recently, and i wanted to really try and play it sensibly.

With this new outlook on the game, I missed all but 3 fairways with my driver off the tee.
I had been working on my stance the past week, and hit my irons comparably better than usual.
I shot -1 for the day on the par 3s. (3 pars and a birdie)
Didn't have a triple bogey.
I didn't hit 1 hybrid or fairway wood. Layed up on par 5s.
So i shot 14 over, which is a record for me - on a longer course with 10x as much sand and water, hitting no woods but the driver, with extremely fast greens.

It is funny how change changes everything.

The clubs I played with looked like this. I guess they are 962Bs.

Psychologically, you were primed for a good round. You skipped out of work with buds at noon and had a friend's backup clubs to play golf with. Your brain was probably relaxed and unstressed (essentially your subconscious told yourself because you've skipped out on work with buddies and are borrowing clubs, lets have fun and enjoy a round of golf....instead of worrying about swing thoughts and trouble on the course.)

I had a similar experience. On vacation in Hawaii with the family, didn't bring my clubs. One of my best friends lives out there. I borrowed his old mid 80s Hogan Edge butterknives and another friend's Callaway FT5 driver, play 18 holes in extremely windy conditions on a course I've never played before and shoot a great round. I was so relaxed on the tee, I hit just about every fairway.

uttexas, you are probably right. I did not have high expectatons for the round so I was playing more relaxed. I will have to try those clubs again & see if I get the same returns.
