Last night on Pardon the Interruption, they swore that Tiger had the tourney handed to him because of this ruling. Wilbon and Marrioti seemed to not understand that the relief was granted not for the clubhouse, but for the grandstands that he would have had to hit over. I was suprised that Reali didn't correct them, especially given that the rules official was interviewed live on TV just after it happened and explained exactly that.

That the clubhouse is not marked o.b. is a suprise, as I've never seen that before. The ruling would have been the same for anyone there. Certainly would have been different if you or I did it as we wouldn't have had the benefit of a blimp camera to show us where the ball went.

What would the ruling have been if the grandstands weren't there? As I understood the rules official, TIO was the grandstands, not the clubhouse...

what a disgrace and they call this a WORLD golf event. Only tiger or another high profile American player would have got a free drop from an air conditioning vent on the roof of the clubhouse.

Wrong. The rules were followed, and Tiger was smart enough to check to see if it was OB rather than to just fire another ball before checking.

Clubhouses are rarely out of bounds. The mini-discussion about your genitals, boofy, has been removed.

As I think back to the courses that I've played locally, it seems to me that most have a white line between the 9th/18th green and the clubhouse. Perhaps I'm remembering incorrectly, as I've never had to worry about a shot like Tiger's. The clubhouse wouldn't be called a TIO, would it? If the ball hadn't been picked up and/or the grandstands weren't there, what would the decision have been?

The article in usa today claims the clubhouse was the obstruction, not the grandstands. It also says after the allowable 5 minutes, officials determined Tigers ball had been picked up. It sure didn't appear that way on t.v.

The rules official interviewed at the scene said otherwise, though. Clubhouses don't quite meet the "T" part of "TIO".

Well, whatever the case, it wasn't Tiger's fault.

Didn't he even say after the round that he had no clue how the ball wasn't deemed to be out of bounds? He said he just took the ruling as it was and moved on.

I thought I heard the interview where he said this, but I could have dreamed it for all I know. My mind isn't clicking on all cylinders..
