Hey guys today I played my first high school tournament. I shot a 52, which didn't make me very happy, but I was calm the whole way through and always focused on the shot at hand. However my first hole I ripped a drive onto the fairway, hit the green (second shot) and parred the hole. Next hole double bogey, but I still didn't have the green speed down and I had a bad chip. As the round went on my short game, drives, and iron shots got continually worse.

Some of this is due to my tempo. The first whole my whole body was relaxed and I just swung and kept to fundamentals. After that I felt like my swing was getting faster and more out of control and my chipping an utter mess (after spending the majority of my practice time this week chipping). The only real thing that saved me was my putting.

Does this ever happen to anyone else?

Also I plan to see a pro for lessons. I try to fix my swing, but it's very tough when I really can't tell exactly what I'm doing wrong. Especially since I don't know what I'm doing right. Any tips on how you work on your swing?

I think you hit on it. Its probably your tempo breaking down. You had some early success with the par out of the gate, got excited or cocky, and then the swing got too quick. I have this problem from time to time too after starting off hot.

When I get tired I start to overswing to compensate; the description of your round matches.
