Well ive had about 6 months off golf and started back this week. I tend to have trouble hitting a straight or draw ball, and i know i must be coming over the top because all of my divots point left. When i try to swing from inside i tend to block it out right. What are some good drills to get a square swing, or slight draw into my game. I notice with SW-9 iron i can hit it straight but 6-4 iron often cut. Im guessing this is due to the offset in the clubs?

i have the same problem, couldnt hit right to left if my life depended on it. i found out i was taking it too inside and coming over the top. well now i've been working on my swing, its more upright now and i take the club head down the line, slightly bow my left wrist (used to be cupped), and the feeling of staying connected with my arms against my chest on the down swing naturally goes in to out for the most part. still working on it though i can get it to go pretty straight but still learning how to control the distance of the draw and not hook it

You need a video. There can be lots of reasons for coming over the top.

- Moving the hands away from the body on the take-away
- Starting down with the arms
- Spinning out the hips
- Not enough forward hip thrust

If your trying to come from the inside your probably not rotating your arms through impact. Fixing a push is easier than fixing a slice. Keep up with the push, but try to get your left arm more through the impact zone, not the hands, the arms.

No no NO! That is terrible advice and will only lead to even more problems.

If you come from the inside and push it to the right, you are probably rolling the wrists open in the backswing, the arms get left behind and throws the club face open or holding off the wrists. Impossible to tell without video really. I would put a guess on that your take-away path is erratic or that you roll the wrists on the backswing.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
