I played yesterday and I was scrambling a lot to make par, I shot a 38 on 9. (Par 36) Then on the fourth hole, it was a par 5, 530 yds with a dog leg right. I hit the best drive of the day, took a four iron, hit a slight draw landed 15 ft from the pin on the green. I had the chance for my first eagle attempt this year. I got nervous and hit the putt 7 ft passed the hole, and ended up three putting to get par. Very aggravating, but my iron shot and drive was amazing. The people in my group were impressed, but i had to freaking three putt I was so mad.

I know the pain. On Saturday I'm playing the 18th which is a par 5 510 yards and I fire one down the middle and smash a 3 wood right on the green about 40 feet. Not expecting to make the 40 footer for eagle I give the putt a good run and finish 6 feet past. Missed that one (that kind of day on the green) and tapped in for par. I just shrugged my shoulders and thought of how silly this game is when you can cover 500+ yards in two shots but take 3 from 40 feet. Strange game.

I don't understand how you get nervous from an eagle putt. Just think of it like this. Your putting for double bogey, it doesn't matter its at that location, it will break and roll the same, if you make it you make it. I understand getting to the hole, you don't want to leave an eagle putt short, but 7 feet is a ton man. You should have backed away if you got nervous. But as soon as you start thinking a putt is a putt no matter what the score. It still one stroke, it still this putt at this moment, you will start making more of them.

I disagree with the psychology here. It's pretty well known that putting stats for the pros are much better for par putts than birdie putts of the same length. To me that indicates you should always pretend every putt is to save par. Obviously everyone's different and if you are sure you putt much worse for birdie or par than for double cause your score's already f-ed for the hole, then cool. But I find the former method better. Not that that means I'm a good putter, as evidence by:

I 3-putt for bogey more than I'd like to admit. Not a ton, but more. More often on par 4's of course. Driver, 4i into a 530 yard par 5 (dog leg or no), is two sweet shots though!
