I have a retired BB Warbird driver and yes they do have a sweet sound. Nothing like any of the newer drivers. When you do upgrade you will get use to the new sound!

Anything that sounds different is going to sound weird to you. When I bought my '07 Burner, I thought it was really high pitched and tinny, but I hit it well and after a couple rounds, I grew to love the sound. Then I bought the Cleveland, and it sounded weird, it was louder and had a lower tone than the Burner, so it sounded weird to me, but I got used to it. I hit a buddy's Callaway FT-5, and after hitting the Cleveland for a while, I expect to hear that great loud sound when I make solid contact, but the FT-5 was more of a quiet thud. It sounded dead compared to my last 2 drivers, but I hit it very well.

No matter what you get, you'll get used to it quickly if you hit it well. And then instead of weird, you'll love the sound of a pure shot.

My former driver was a Cobra M Speed offset. That thing sounded like a college softball game. I got tired of the sound and the offset and replaced it with my G10. Loooooove my G10- sound, look, and results!

Very relevant topic.  Sorry to be Debbie the downer, but I have permanent ringing in my left ear as a result of hitting an obnoxiously loud driver.  For legal reasons I'm not going to mention the OEM.  Now, I always wear an ear plug in my left ear whenever I'm practicing drivers or playing, because I don't want it to get even worse.  Before I started wearing ear plugs, my ear would ring all night long and I had trouble getting to sleep.  I went to an ear specialist and they documented hearing loss.

So, I'm searching for the quietest driver that doesn't totally rob me of distance.  So far, I've found the old Callaway C4 to have a nice muted sound.  Also, there is a company called Louisville Golf that still makes persimmon drivers.  The Callaway C4 is "only" 360cc's and Louisville Golf's drivers range from 195 to 360 cc's.

I would love to find a driver in the 440-460cc range with some modern technology (adjustable, high COR, high MOI), with a low decibel level.  Sadly, this will probably never happen until someone wins a huge lawsuit against an OEM.

An old thread, but since it was bumped, I have some more feedback on drivers that I've hit.

Callaway RAZR X Black - Because of the composite construction, it has an odd sound.  No displeasing, but there's no real "I got ahold of that one sound".  Every shot sounds about the same regardless of where you hit it on the clubface.

Taylormade R11 - Quiet and dull sounding compared to the R9.  Every shot sounds the same.

Srixon Z-Star - Distinct sound.  The first time I hit it after gaming the RAZR for a few months, the amount of sound surprised me.  It's not like the older Clevelands or Cobras, it's just not the same as any other driver I've hit.  I played a round with a guy yesterday that asked me what driver I was hitting because he liked the way it sounds when hit off the sweetspot.  You can definitely tell that the tone changes when you don't hit it in the center of the face.
