Hi guys.

I've been pondering a new set of irons to replace my Dad's hand-me-down Ping Zing clubs. I had lessons for about 6 months about 10 years ago (!), so I feel that I know the basics, but since I've only just started to get back into golf, I seem to be averaging about 28 over :(

I've recently come across the Nike Sumo set, and they seem perfect for what I need - very forgiving, with a huge, wide head to give me the same confidence that my Ping's do.

My question is (assuming that most people agree that this is a good choice of club!) :

Should I get the Sumo's in steel or graphite shaft? Apparently, they come in the Nike iDiamana graphite shafts or steel - both regular flex.

I hit a few of my friend's graphite shafted clubs and found them much smoother and easier than steel, but when I went to my local golf shop and swung a few clubs in front of the salesman (who was apparently a 5 handicap), he suggested steel over graphite, as I have a slightly above average swing speed. I'm not quite sure how he could say that though, as I wasn't actually measured by a machine! I'm also thinking that it may be a good thing for me to slow down my swing, since I'm not the most consistent hitter!

Thoughts?

Sombody correct me if I am wrong.

This is what I belive happens.
Steel shaft = more consistant/acurate ball flight.
graphite = More distence and higher ball flight with slower swing speeds but less acurate and consistant.

But if you are shotting 28 over, I don't belive you will notice much of a difference. No offence, just saying.

Thanks for the advice. No offence taken!...I know I have a lot to do!

Does anyone know how the Nike Sumo irons compare to my old Ping Zings? I don't doubt that my Pings were considered a better club than the Sumo's when they were first released, but the Zing's are now 15 years old...!

Also, how closely related are the Sumo's to the Nike Machspeed clubs?

Not sure, but ive heard the victory red nikes are great,or the taylormade 09 burner go a mile....

Distance isn't really what I'm looking for. I'm happy cracking a 7 iron 160 yards...I just need consistency! The reason I am drawn to the Sumo's is because they're marketted as a pure game improvement iron, with a massive back, to improve consistency... I'm just struggling to figure out where they sit in the rest of the Nike range - are they considered better than the Slingshot series?

i think consistency is down to the swing not the iron...

I am not very familiar with the Sumos, but i know a lot of people like the Nike Slingshots, give them a look. I have seen beginners down to single digit handicaps playing them. They are also quite cheap ($200-300 I believe). The HL (highlaunch) version are supposedly very forgiving.

Totally agree, they were my first good set of irons and they are really easy to hit...

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
