I read somewhere on another forum that their instructor had them us a large rubber band during a lesson. Anyone ever used one of these before? And what does it help with?

Where was the band used? If it was around the arms, to keep the elbows and armpits closer to the body, then yes, that is a good drill. An option is to put a coin, marble or something under them, swinging without letting them fall down.

What is the significance of keeping the arms close to the body like that? I have just recently been having a very hard time getting the ball in the air with my irons. And I need all the help i can get. I am on the brink of getting lessons because I have become so frustrated with this game we all love!

the point of that drill is to work on connection through impact. the further the hands are from the body, and the straighter the arms are, helps to create the "triangle" at impact. i used to have a low ballflight, but have worked hard on my connection to get the ball in the air more.

I've had a lesson where my instructor put a rubber band around my hips and hung on, pulling me towards the target using most of his weight as I did slow, half-swings from setup to the top of my backswing and back to impact (full swings would have clocked him right in the face with the club!). If I remember correctly, I think it was to stop me "thrusting" my hips forward into the downswing instead of clearing them by simply rotating... it was quite a tiring drill but I remember smashing the first four or five iron shots afterwards perfectly...

So he pretty much taught you the exact opposite of how you should use the hips.

So he pretty much taught you the exact opposite of how you should use the hips.

I don't dispute that the hips should move laterally as part of the downswing, however the "thrusting" I mentioned is when the hips move too far towards the target too quickly, causing the upper and lower body to become disjointed. The rubber band around the hips forced me to stay connected - for me, simply rotating my hips rather than concentrating on firing my weight forwards results in the correct transfer of weight from my back to front foot and lateral hip movement.

I'm doubtful, but it's possible you're one of the small minority of people who push forward too far. Got a good face-on video?

I'm doubtful, but it's possible you're one of the small minority of people who push forward too far. Got a good face-on video?

It's certainly possible - if your lower body is too explosive, it can leave your upper body behind. The result was that I would finish my swing with an overly-arched back, like a reverse 'C'. I don't have any footage from when I had this problem, but I will have a go at re-creating it at the range later...

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position. 
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
