I have played well so far this year but the last trip to the course I hit most of my iron shots fat. Even pitch shots. I know that the most common fix for this is a good weight shift. I seem to be doing this but still am hitting the fats. Any ideas?

My usual fat shot comes early in a round because I am one of those guys who goes from my vehicle to the 1st tee. :) It normally occurs when I fail to get my weight transfered over to the front side.

All I do is take a few practice swings exaggerating my weight transfer, and at the same time making a mental picture of the divot slightly past where my ball lies.

Im sure the other guys on here have some great tips. I sorta play by feel and get sloppy with my mechanics at times.

I have struggled with fat shots before and still do from time to time. I have come to the conclusion that it is not just caused from your weight being back or from flipping. Sure, if you have your weight and hands forward it will be harder to hit it fat, but not impossible. I believe with me it is simply an aiming issue. I can make great divots all day long forward of center, even out by my front foot, but put a ball there and my focus moves back. I have tried focusing on a point a few inches in front of the ball, and this helps with the fats, but I hit shots off the heel and toe then.

There are many causes for laying the sod over it. So without seeing your swing it is tough to diagnose. One thing that can cause fat shots when your still making a good weight shift is laying the club off flat. My friend went through this for a while. On the way down his club was laying off causing him to come in very flat. you can get away with it most of the time with your longer clubs but with short irons, wedges, etc, it will bring in a few types of misses. *If this is your problem* (and like I said I have no clue without seeing it), focusing on just a weight shift could make it worse. When you focus on just clearing your hips and clear them too early it can drop the club even further inside. I would recommend video taping or having a knowledgeable friend take a look at your angle of attack and then take it from there. Just a thought.......

    • Did the 'club' conform to the Equipment Rules?
    • I was there just for sunday, and it went smoothly. Thanks @Hardspoon for helping in setting this up.
    • I say this in believing the guy should just pay you and he's a d**k for not.  Do you guys play by the USGA rules strictly? If so, then the claim is valid. It sucks, but it is. Again, he is a d**k for being that nitpicky over it. If he wants to play the game of waiting for you to finish to have his ah-ha moment, again he's a d**k. Though, if the putter is non-conforming, you maybe able to claim that it is not a club?  Just talk to your group and don't invite him back.
    • Couple of added points.  It was pink and maybe 18 long.  I am 6 1   And he waited until the round was over to say something when he was in my 4 some in the other cart.
    • I would have paid you. I think it's a reasonable assumption that the extra putter was not in play.  Having said that "Did you declare the extra putter out of play?"  This person seems like a bit of a weenie and he is also setting a dangerous precedent. Let's say he wins next month. Then when it's your turn to pay up, you could refuse. Telling him "I timed you on hole 8 and you searched for your ball and found it at 3 minutes and 1 second. So, you should have taken stroke, plus distance and didn't." You could then show him your stopwatch feature on your phone where you timed it out to 3:01 and say "See."  I actually would just let it go and assume the guy is a weenie. Because doing stuff like that takes the fun out of friendly bets. If he can't afford to pay up, he shouldn't bet.
