not a good idea, very small clubhead for a long shaft.

I know, but he already has a driver and can't hit it well. It's clearly a swing issue, so I gave him what he wanted. It wont hurt (except his wallet), and it might help him (at least mentally) if he tries it.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

I wouldn't be mucking around with something that seems to be working very well, hitting your 3W like that is pretty impressive and I wouldn't change it at all. I think you'll find that sticking a much longer shaft in will turn it into a much less consistent club.

Similar to what the others have suggested I think your options are 1: Look for a second 3 wood - 13˚for off the tee just like a very small headed, high lofted driver (Drivers used to be much smaller that the size current 3 woods are).

2: Find a more lofted driver (I thought you could adjust the R9 up or down 1˚, I'd make it an 11.5 and see how that goes).

3: Grip down or have your driver shaft cut down: in my experience this makes it much easier to overcome the issue of "the larger head on a driver plays fits with my mind trying to hit the center everytime" - mush easier to hit the centre consistently with a shorter shaft. Unfortunately you're going to have to get over your phobia of teeing the ball higher, hit the range and hit a few balls, it's not a big deal really.

4: You might also consider finding a smaller headed driver - R9 420 / R7 425 or one of a few <400cc models that are out there (Maybe older models), the smaller size might increase your confidence and suit your eye better.

I was in a similar position. I hit my 3 Wood really well, hit my driver like crap. Wanted to ditch the driver or get a 13˚ 3 Wood but ultimately I realised that I needed a driver in my bag and I needed to learn to hit it confidently. I spent a little bit of time with my driver, worked out most of the issues were alignment and now have confidence in it which is lucky because my 3 Wood has completely abandoned me in the last couple of rounds and without my driver, I would've been hitting a 23˚ hybrid off the tee which leaves a very long second shot on 420 yard par 4s.

I consider my 12 degree with a 46 inch shaft a 2 wood. I start the round with this club. If things are going well by the time we get to number three, which is a long par 4, I switch to the regular driver. If not its two wood off the tee and then off the deck. I have played the whole side with the 2 wood. Our retired pro (50 year career at the same CC.) continually said he could drop everyone's handicap by 2 strokes by taking the driver out of everyone's bag.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
