Can You Make a "Super" 3W for off the tee?

Currently I hit my 3w off the tee alot and get about 240-250yds now that its summer. I rarely pull out the driver because I cannot make good contact with it and dont want to sacrifice the consistency.

My question is could I try to construct a "Super" 3wood if you will that I could use as a driver getting me up in the 275yds consistently? Would a 45" shaft get me up closer to that range? It could be just the YIPS but the larger head on a driver plays fits with my mind trying to hit the center everytime. Also I do not like teeing the ball up high at all, the 3W allows me to virtually hit it off the deck in the tee box

If you can hit your 3w 250 and are a 18 hc, just about the dumbest thing you could be worrying about is how to hit your 3w 275. Work on your short game. And learn to hit your driver, don't try to hide from it.

Depending on the shaft, a longer 3 wood sometimes hits the ball super high, especially if the club design is of the "helper" type. Before going 45 inches, try something just a little shorter to see if that works well. Maybe one inch longer will do it for you. I tried a longer shafted 3 wood and finally gave up on it. Others seem to be able to do it. The other alternative is a 13 degree 3 wood, which is stronger than the typical 15 degrees. I always thought the old Callaway 3+ Warbird was a great club at 13 degrees, and you can get these for not much money at their Pre-owned store online.

Agreed short game has many more situations, looks to focus on however thats one of the better parts of my game. Todays stats: Score: 91 30 putts 15 chips 1 sand shot Penalties...... 6 which all of were off the tee 3 of these with with the 1 wood until I put it in the bag for the day.

Sounds like you should work on your ball striking and irons instead. If you consistently hit the 3W 250 and straight, you should be in a very good position to hit a lot of greens. Since you get so many penalties, you obviously struggle with the irons.

The fact still remains that you need to learn to hit your driver if you want to be longer. Altering the shaft length will mess up the lie of the club and the ball height. Alternatively, i think the 13degree 3 wood is a good idea for your situation. $300 worth of driver and it causes all that trouble...

+ 15 chips and 30 putts suggest you may need to work on your short game.

250 with a 3 wood is nice distance. Just keep your driver out of your bag until you feel that you can keep the ball in play. I played with a 3 wood and a 2 iron as my driving clubs for years. I could care less if the other guys were smoking their shots past me.

When I had an R9 driver I put that shaft (45.25") in my R9 3 wood (just on the range to see how it worked). It worked great, certainly longer than the stock 3 wood shaft (43") and straight too. I wouldn't like to try it off the fairway though with such a long shaft.
My advice (fwiw) would be to keep that 3 wood as it is if it is so reliable and try demo a 13 degree 3 wood. I had a nike sq 13 degree 3 wood, it was almost as long as my driver off the tee but hard to get any useful carry off the fairway.

If you put a 45" shaft in a 3-wood all you have done is create a 15 degree small-head driver. Then you will be in the same position, except without a 3-wood. A 3-wood is easier to hit than a driver mostly because of the extra loft and shorter shaft (same reason why a wedge is easier to hit than a 4-iron). Keep it as it is and just work on the rest of your game. If you can't hit your driver, try and find a shaft that you can hit in a driver and work on improving that.

My suggestion would be to NOT do ANYTHING to that 3 wood you have. If you hit it 250 and straight, don't F with it.
If you want to hit a driver better, work on that club, or try out some different used drivers at your local shop, or buy one on eBay for cheap.
Sounds like that 3 wood is pretty good to you. A "go-to" club so to speak. Don't fix it if it is not broken.

yes there is "super 3 woods".
They're called high lofted drivers.

A 12 degree driver with a slightly shorter heavier shaft than standard, 44 or 44.5 might be worth a try. The 3 wood has more loft and a shorter, usually sightly heavier shaft. Trying something like this would probably still get your 15-20 yards over your 3 wood but still be easier to play than your current driver. Try teeing your driver lower than usual also, this helps some people with this issue, I have no idea why.

you can easily get to scratch hitting it 250 off the tee... seriously, just work on your short game and practice your putting.

If you can consistantly hit your 3 wood like that, then your problems are elsewhere.

I am in the same boat. I can tee off consistently well with my 3W, and "occasionally", slam a keeper down the middle of the fairway with the driver. I can go to the driving range and feel pretty proud of the way I am hitting there with the big boy, but then back on the course, it's back to usual. My new Callaway X460 is coming in on Wednesday. Can't wait to see if that makes any difference in my mental game.

might as well upgrade to a full sized driverhead.
