dont weaken your grip for the tournament, keep it the same. The posture change will help you in the short run. If you change your grip right now you will hit everything to the right and will hate me. Takes at least two weeks for grip changes to be tournament ready. Change the posture and just shorten your backswing. Do you play other sports? What? How long have  you been playing?

How do you figure? Pros have won majors with incredibly strong grips and incredibly weak grips. Pros have won majors slumped over at address and feeling very rigid at address. There's virtually NO commonality among the setup positions of the best golfers in the world.

FWIW kennay, your grip is a little strong, but it's down on the list of priorities and since you said your miss is an occasional SLICE, changing the grip now may result in bigger issues. And some pros play with a strong grip, and it's NOT the cause of hitting the ball fat.

Don't do that. Continue to look at the ball out of the center of your eyes. Lifting your chin up serves no real purpose except to make it difficult to see the ball out of your central vision. Sticking your chest out makes no sense either. Why? Be vary wary of people who not only tell you that you have "six months" of work ahead of you but also tell you to do things without telling you why.

Ben Hogan didn't put his chin up and stand super stiff with his chest puffed out. Nor Arnold Palmer. I could go on...

BTW, I specifically chose Grant in this picture because his hands are even a little too far "in" to him... and they're still not hanging like your arms.

Yes ive greatly noted how high my shaft comes in and it causes a lot of toe divots. But what exactly do you mean my arms hang inside my arms, and what exactly would be forward ankle flexion.?

Inside your shoulders, meant to type. Sorry.

Forward ankle flexion? Look at the picture. Your legs are straight up and down. Flex your ankles forward. Less |, more /.

No. Forward flexion at the ankles. Not sticking your butt out more. Knees sticking out farther. Arms father out too. It'll probably feel like your weight is on your toes but in reality it will be more centralized.

You told him to lift up his chin and puff out his chest. Why you'd want someone to have to look at the ball out of the bottom of his eyes is beyond me.

Also, he'd restrict his arm swing if he swung his hands deeper. Players who lift their arms out in order to get "width" often have long swings. We see it - and fix it - all the time. You can't overswing if you maintain pressure point four against your chest (left arm against chest) and don't let it ride up too high.

So now Ben Hogan had flaws in his setup? C'mon. They're not flaws.

Shortening your backswing is all I was really driving. That is the root cause of the early release. By the way, if you have only been playing ten months you have a great swing and have no limit to your potential. What other sports do you play?

Look, I think you should find someone you trust nearby and take lessons in person. Teaching by showing you a few pictures and typing some things up while I'm trying to watch House at the same time is not the best method. ;-)

You overflex your right arm. Fix your setup a little and feel like your right arm stays straight the entire backswing, like it never bends at all. Film that and get back to us. Odds are you'll be surprised at how much it bends and you'll have to keep doing it more and more.

This to create more width in my swing and im guessing shorten it? And should i also be focusing as well on still driving my hips forward more and mainting lag with all this as we discussed earlier or are those not priority right now?

He is right with your natural ability, find a good teacher in your area, preferably one that has a track record and a stable of junior and college players on his roster. Professional instruction that I disagree with is better than no instruction at all. Where do you live?

Obviously there is much dissention in this arena of ideas. i live in northwest houston,tx... I wouldnt say that I have all that much money to pay for lessons though :/

People almost always hit the ball fat for one of two reasons.

Their weight isn't far enough forward or they've lost the flying wedge. You lose the flying wedge AND your weight could go forward more. The bigger problem is your wedge. I'd work on shortening the backswing right now. Combine that with the "hit and stop" drill where you can check your wedge post-impact.

Straight arms on the backswing (again, you'll be surprised how far it will still go), straight arms (and stop before your left arm even hits horizontal). Should look like this:

Awesome thanks, if you ever come to houston for some random reason erik. Let me know, may find some money to pay you for lesson or two

We're flying in to Houston (or San Antonio... to do a two-day school at The Quarry in San Antonio on March 19/20) on the 17th. Edel putter fitting training on the 18th.

You should come to the school. You'll get better quickly. Send me a PM and we'll see what kind of rate we can put together...

    • Part of the clubmaker's process, in this case, is to have the player come back after a few rounds for any necessary tweaking, FWIW.
    • I totally agree with this but beginners are not good players that can adjust to almost every club setup.  A ping certified fitter, ex pro that plays at my home course, told me that the idea of the fitting in this case is to give the player the clubs that are at least suited for his body type in general. (body, arms, hands, strength, speed, etc) so he can go an play or have lessons with clubs that are not perfect for him but close enough. From there is up to the player to come back for another fitting in the future in case he feels his current clubs are no longer suited for his new swing/mechanics.  So.. I vote basic club fitting then lessons.
    • Okay, so my children and I got into a heated debate at the dinner table last night.  We were discussing making Christmas Cookies and got on the topic of what is the best cookie.  I personally think the Oatmeal Raisin is the best. My kids mocked me. "THAT'S AN OLD MAN COOKIE!"  Seriously? Does anyone besides me love the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie?  And if not, what is the best cookie?

    • Day 3: 12/12/2024 Okay, so I've already put in about a 1/2 hour of mirror work on my priority piece which I've nicknamed PPJ. The first to P's are starting to feel less bizarro but the J is still too late. As of now, I'm still thinking about it too much. So, although I'm anxious to hit balls, I'm sticking with the mirror work for another day or two. Then I'll move to the garage net.  I set up a small station right outside my office so every time I go in or out I can do a slow-mo PPJ in front of a mirror.
