I understand no matter how I practice or play, not in a million years I'll reach the level of Jack, Tiger, and others at the top because the innate talent isn't there. With that, what would you choose, a talented but lazy player or a mediocre but dedicated player?

What am I choosing him for? On my team, on a fantasy league, guy to emulate, as an idol?

I'd rather be a talented but lazy player. I would always have the option to become dedicated.

I'd choose the talented and lazy player. One who can play great rounds with lots of shot versatility and needing little practice.

I have a hard time believing A) there are lazy players that stay and tour B) every single player is super talented. I think you need both to make it.

Mediocre but dedicated. That player can always improve because they are willing to practice and improve their game. No matter how talented a player is, if they are too lazy to work on their game they arent going to get better.

Interesting question - was Tiger "born" or "made?" If his Dad had not put a club in Tiger's hand from the age of three, if instead he had grown up with T-ball, baseball, basketball, football, and stumbled into golf at age 13, would he still be the "Tiger" we see today? Is Tiger super-athletic, and golf just happened to be the chosen sport, or is he uniquely suited to golf, but not other sports?

Could anyone "make" a Tiger, if they were willing to devote the time, money, and energy?

Me---the type that has FUN. I decided my main focus was going to be playing golf acceptable to MY standard. The practice range etc comes into play when I am unhappy with my game OR I ho some more clubs. Indian or arrow debate.

Id say its a combination of talent, athletic ability and hard work. Theres a lot of tour players who have probably put in just as much practice time as Tiger has but still arent as good as he is.

I dont think its fair or realistic to say that anyone who started playing golf at age 3 could be as good as Tiger.

Agree that to play the the highest level requires both enormous talent and a strong work ethic.

As for which I'd prefer to be... Tough call. Obviously would love to have the talent to go as far as possible, but... Frankly, I enjoy playing and even practicing so much that I can't imagine not devoting myself to it full-bore.

Gimme the talent, and I'll hope that someone or something can motivate me to make most of it.

Cheers,
DoctorK

Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course... the space between your ears.

Yes, interesting question indeed. I think if the talent isn't there, a player can never reach the level of greatness. There are just players that are always a step ahead of us no matter what, good example there is Tim Duncan, he used to be a swimmer as a youngster but discovered that his talent is for Basketball. He improves so much with little time. I think he'll still be Tiger today even if he learned golf older because its in his genes.

Is that when he discovered he was going to be over 7 feet tall and fairly strong?

It was when a typhoon destroyed pools he practices in Virgin Islands. Part of it maybe was his height, he never played Basketball until college if I'm not mistaken. Basketball just came very natural to him.

Wow. Shoulda checked his bio - clearly I don't follow the NBA.
