Picked up some TaylorMade r7 irons and can't keep them shooting straight....yes, I know it's me.
They are regular shaft and my woods are stiff.
I don't have a fast swing, but use a lot of arm strength, which I feel, makes my shots off target.

I have a tendency to hit my irons left, my question is, would a stiffer shaft or a heavier head help my swing???

Do you still have your previous set of clubs? How do those work for you? Were the previous irons stiff or reg shaft?

Take both sets of irons to the range and switch between the clubs if you can. Or just go back to your old set and send me your new set 8-) (kidding).

If you have a moderate to slow swing speed, stick with the regular shaft. If you change to stiffer shafts you might get slightly more accurate, but you'll lose a lot of distance. The cons outweigh the pro's in this regard.A better investment would be some lessons, fix any swing flaws causing the problem. It'll probably work out cheaper too

My old set was reg stiffness too, but I sold them to help finance the new ones.
I found I can hit the 3 & 4 hybrids a lot better than my 3 & 4 irons, that's what makes me believe a heavier iron would help straighten my swing.

It's frustrating, but keep at it. Any corrections to your swing, swing path, etc. should and will be made by adjustments to your swing , not your clubs.

I was having much the same issue when I got my new clubs but have since discovered that a small change in ball position (for me it was a slight move back in my stance) has pretty much fixed my iron issues.
Keep experimenting on the range - I'll bet a fix isn't that far away.

For me was my poor alignment....Talked to my good friend (PGA Pro) and he gave some great pointers to look for when out on the course...it definitely has helped my game...

As has been said here many times, hard to say without seeing your swing. However, a good clue is that you say you use "a lot of arm strength." I would be willing to bet that causes you to come over the top and cast the club from the outside. Most golfers that swing really hard with their arms end up getting their arms ahead of their body, which causes an over the top move. If you come through the ball with the face closed, that over the top move causes you to pull the ball left. If the face is open you'll hit a pull slice. In any case, you need to fix your swing instead of trying to cure the problem with new equipment. If your tempo's good you won't feel like you're using a lot of arm strength. Your swing will feel almost effortless and you'll hit the ball farther and straighter. Just my $.02 FWIW but I'm guessing going from R flex to S flex in your irons might straighten your shots out just a little and also cost you a little in the distance dept. It certainly won't cure the problem entirely.

Also, whatever flex you use, Reg, Stiff, Senior, Ladies-it won't matter if you're coming over the top with the face closed or open.

Yeah, I hate throwing money at a problem, but we're in the Obama administration...LOL!!!
(That was merely a joke, I did vote for him)

I talked to a shop pro last night, and he kinda agreed with me, the r7's are a light club and that a heavier head might help.
He also suggest to come back, when I had some time, and do some test swings to check if my clubs just need adjusted to my stance/swing.

I understand there is no fix all, but it all started when I bought a new driver and altered how I swing one, I think those changes carried over to my normal swing.

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
