I just graduated with a communications degree from UCSD. I have also been golfing for my whole life and it is a passion for me. I would like to combine my passion with my education and be able to work in the field of golf while also being able to play in tournaments in my spare time. Does anybody have any insight into which occupation might be a good match for someone like me? This is what I have been trying to figure out for the past few weeks and figured I would share it on here and see if anyone else has tips.. thanks a bunch

First, congratulations: I hope you spent some time at that muni just north of your campus during your four years.

Second, I've heard golf industry jobs aren't always great for folks who want to play golf. But there are golf companies who have PR and advertising groups. You might, for example, look at Titleist's webpage and see if they're hiring. I know that when I finish my degree, I'll probably apply to many golf companies.

I've heard of guys whose job entails playing golf with clients, but I can't for the life of me figure out which job this is (other than "the awesome one").

The obvious job is a PGA professional. Important to be sure you are looking to be a working professional not a playing professional. I had the opportunity to work at a number of clubs and had a lot of opportunities to play. Money is tight in the golf biz. If you really want to be affiliated with a club mfg company than realize the good jobs are very hard to come by.....you would start by slinging at demo days etc. In al honestly the PGA route is the best based on the info. The role of a PGA pro is changing these days. There were only a limited number of roles for a pro in the past but they have expanded to a lot more. Go to http://www.pga.com/pgaofamerica/classifications/ and you can see the variety available.

As a Pastor I get out to golf with members of the church on a consistent basis. Sometimes counseling and ministry take place and other times its just for fun, but in some cases it could be viewed as golfing with a "client"

Shindig..can you believe it that i actually didnt even play torrey one time when i was down there... i barely even played golf due to all the essays i had to write, i played 1 round in san diego over the span of 2 years.. i recently started to play again and have been playing better than ever and havent had a chance to get back down there to play.. i am considering playing in san diego city championship which is held there.. in which case i would definitely have to play it.

It's all about getting the right sales job or the right kind of buyer position. My previous job was great I got to play a lot of golf and got free pro v1s but make no mistake if you are expensing that much golf you better have good numbers. Now I work for the government so between having flex hours and a lot more vacation time I get some time on the course.

Communications is a wide field. Are we talking technical comm? How about something with CDW? Don't they handle the scoring for the PGA? Imagine following the tour and setting up those electronic scoreboards at every event.

My boss has a brother who works as a lobbyist. His entire job is to entertain clients. He plays golf all over the country, and makes good money doing it.
