Yep, I landed myself a nice caddying job this summer at a really good golf course :]

I was wondering if anyone had some tips for caddying -- if you've been a caddy, or if you've had one before.

What do you expect of them? What makes some better than others? Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks

Out here in Asia caddies are quite common. I've used caddies in Singapore, Thailand, China,Malaysia and Indonesia. In my experience, there are 2 types of caddy, helpful (usually a golfer themselves) and unhelpful.

The unhelpful ones will merely carry your bag, wipe down your club after each shot and mark your ball on the green. That's about it. On the other hand, the helpful ones will do almost everything with the exception of hitting the shot! They'll know the course intimately, if you hit a stray shot, they'll know where to look, they know the yardages and will be able to advise whether you should charge or lay up, and they'll know the greens very well. They'll repair your divots, pitch mark and mark your ball on the green. With this type of caddie, all you need to do is hit balls and have fun with your buddies! You're a single figure player, so you should know your way around the golf course and should be able to value-add, rather than just carry the bag. I think if you can do this, you should be able to command some good tips!

I agree, thats what i´m paying a caddie for, but then again, this could be pretty difficult to do, if you never have played the course before yourself or with people you are caddying for. You wont know the tricky spots where balls might just go astray on teeshots, you might under or overestimate yardages and you dont know the greens.

So you really should put some effort in to play and study the course - and do it in 4somes with different hcps. - that way you can get a feel for different type of shots and where they tend to end up.

If other caddies are in the group, work as a team.
* On most holes - especially tighter ones - have one caddie get out ahead to the landing area to see where the tee shots go. Major way to speed up play
* Around the green have one caddie tend the pin, and the other rake the traps as need (you take, I'll rake).
* When tending the pin, don't...
- step on a player's line of putt
- allow your shadow to fall over the cup

For right handed golfers: When giving the golfer his/her club, plant the bag about two feet to the right of the ball. After the player selects the club, move the bag backward before the golfer hits.

Wipe the clubhead after every shot. If it's a messy shot, follow up with a little brush, or a golf tee to clean the grooves.

At end of each hole, check quickly to make sure you have all 14 clubs. It's easy to leave a wedge or an 8-iron greenside if it's been a wild hole.

Giving advice to players:
* Players vary on what they want
* Start off giving them yardage to landing area, green; know scorecard
* If you caddie for one golfer regularly, you learn about his game and teamwork builds

If you find a golfer who cheats regularly, avoid caddieing for this person at all costs.

Have fun!

    • Believe it or Not! I am so excited.  Yesterday, on a hot and windy day, I played a 9 hole course in Claflin. Kansas. 1st 9 = 54 2nd 9 = 43   I am going to try and go back out late this afternoon and play 18 holes at Hays, Kansas.  My 3 hybrid came in yesterday and I am really anxious to try it out.  WooHoo 🥳 🙌 👏  Retired Old Man, Terry

    • First, you have some great choices in there.  Event Horizon remains a birdie movie for me.  It still finds its way onto the October options as Halloween approaches.  It fits well. I continue to forget that Arrival, when being referenced, is not the Charlie Sheen movie I saw in middle school. Lastly, what rating are you giving HG2?  Was it a par?  Bogey?  I gather from your review it didn't earn a hole in one on a par-4.  (I have yet to decide how I'm prioritizing that on my movie queue, and if I should even bother, so I'm looking forward to reviews here)
    • I loved Arrival. Annihilation is a good one. Event Horizon is also one of my classic sci-fi favorites. And now for something completely different: Happy Gilmore 2. I watched HG1 as an adult, and it was alright, but probably would have been better if I watched it as a kid. HG2 had some good parts, but overall I wasn't a big fan. I knew there would be pros in the movie, but I imagined some cameos, not them being straight up actors through large parts of the movie. They're not actors and it showed. I could've done with a lot less of them and John Daly was maybe the best of the pros. The Maxi part was boring.
