I am looking at getting a new driver.

I am just uncertain about the flex of the shaft that I need to be getting.

I carry the ball around 280-300 with a driver that was new 5-8 years ago.

Any advice?

Ask me any questions you have and I will answer to the best of my ability.

Thanks!

Paging Dr. Shanks A Million...

If you are carrying it 300 with your old driver, I would freaking keep that one! But for sure -- since you'd have to be swinging over 120mph -- you would only be choosing between stiff and extra-stiff in a replacement.

See your local fitter. There are tons of shaft choices. Not all stiffs = other stiffs. There is no standard. Or you can spend your money on short game lessons.

ya go with like an x-stiff with a 3.0-2.5* of torque. if your being completely serious about carrying it that far. the question is how consistently do you do that?

That is my biggest dilemma right now.

I have a lazy habit of hooking the ball. I just want to be able to keep the ball as straight as possible off of the tee. I wanted to change the shaft in my driver and the people at the golf store that I went to told me that it was not even worth the money to change the one in my current driver.

I will even take suggestions on what to get.

I have been leaning towards the new FT-Tour by Callaway. I just cannot decide whether or not I want the Stiff or the X-Stiff in it.

Go to your local store that sells Callaway and try out both shafts. The only way to tell.

if your hitting it 300-280 you want x-stiff but i mean i hit it about the same and i hit a stiff with like no torque

or you could listen to shades. his idea seems good

That is what I am looking into.

I just have to find a new place to go and get fitted. I got fitted for my irons about 2 years ago and love them. I just cannot stand the people that work at the store. They are salesmen and not golfers. I want them to help me and not try to make me buy what will give them the best commission. They just have that arrogance that says I am pulling something over on you.

The current driver that I am playing with is a Titleist 905T with an Aldila NV 75-X.

To answer shades, I probably need to spend more time on my short game. Most of the time that I am on the golf course I do work on it. I just do not play enough anymore to get good at it again. I used to be around a 4 handicap and the only reason I am a 10 now is errant drives and my short game. my putting is still pretty good, but that is about it. My 100 yards and in game is not that good.

To answer Cody, I consistantly hit the ball that far. The only reason for the range is depending on the course conditions. I am consistantly a 300 yard driver. The course that I play at most of the time, I only use my driver on the par 5's because it is short and that might be part of my problem. Not enough use.

in theory a s shaft should give you more kick which would make the club head move faster and in turn make the ball go farther but in reality if you hit it over 300 yards into the woods who cares? do you kinda see what i mean. why do you think wedge flex is so stiff, because flex creates variable. if the shaft is to flexible your going to hook it and if its to stiff your going to slice but if your problem is hooking like you said a super stiff shaft might help you out

I have a simple solution for you. Quite honestly, you have a good driver, no real reason to change unless you really want to. I have an FT Tour and I love it... because of the Diamana. With the stock VooDoo, it was not a good driver for me. Anyway, knowing nothing about your swing but knowing that what you have is working as well as it for you, I would suggest the following;

- Cut 1/2" off the butt end of the shaft. This is super cheap and easy to have done by most any club builder. Get a new grip while you're at it. Effective playing length will go from 45" to 44.5" inches.
- Swingweight will be affected by doing this (it will go down about 3 points). You can counter this by using an ultralight grip and/or adding some weight to the club head (lead tape, hot melt, whatever).

Shortening your shaft will not adversely affect your distance in any measurable way but your consistency, and most important, accuracy will improve. If it doesn't give you the results that you're looking for, you're only about $20 in the end. For another $5 you could even have that 1/2 added back via a shaft extender.

Unless you can get fitted, I mean seriously fitted. Then get a new FT Tour or 909D2 or 3 in the loft/shaft combo that works best for you.

Absolutely! From the sounds of it, you might wanna keep that driver though, unless you've already destroyed the face. I flattened the face pretty bad on my last driver and had to upgrade. My driver club head speed is also between 120-127, however I swing a S-Flex with a 2.5 torque shortened .5

I've heard some good things about the Fubuki 73x and UST V2 Tour 8800x but have yet to hit either one. Hopefully soon though Good luck with the search and keep us posted on your fitting. My .02

Thanks Cody!

That is kind of what I have read in all of my looking. I will probably look into a X then.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
