I have never, thought about quitting, not even after a nightmare round. Quitting golf is the last thing I would ever do - I'd much sooner quit alcohol or quit meat (and become a veggie), but quit golf? Unthinkable.

+1

If you're having trouble with tight water, try practising how to shoot a little straighter. There's most satisfaction in improving and succeding than there is quitting.

I had to do a lot of soul searching before I decided to start playing golf a few weeks ago. I have a habit of rushing into new hobbies and/or emo-rage quitting or throwing a fit when things aren't going my way. It is a major personality trait of mine, although it has been getting better with age, that I wish I didn't have. I've never understood those who throw clubs or any kind of tantrums on the course yet I could easily see myself being one of those people. When I decided to start learning, I told myself I would never, ever, be that way and stick with the game. Learning is going a bit slower than I had figured it would and I lose quite a few balls. Other than loudly saying "oh come on, you can do better than that" a few times on the course, I have never once lost my temper. Maybe golf will actually be a good thing for my bad personality traits.

Hah. My more serious internal debates revolve more around the expense than the sucking, but enjoy reading the thoughts. The only thing I didn't like about the move was losing access to my practice facility... Sixty bucks a month and all you can hit on the range, all you can play on the par 3, a gigantic putting green, a bunkers and short-game pitching green, and a chipping green on the other side. I'd spend two or three hours a day there in the 100 degree San Antonio sun and in a few months scrabbled from raw beginner to the occasional sniff at bogey for nine. (+10, +12, etc.)

Then I move, and I'm lucky to get a day a week where I can either hit the range or play nine. It costs the same, either way... And there's no every day with practice facility options nearby under 150-200/month. Well, I could get a Par 3 membership for 30 or so a month up-front for the year... but that's the aforementioned ANY miss is out of play or in the water course that just makes me want to drink heavily.

I do wish hard work was the only obstacle to getting better. Like in Coyne's Paper Tiger -- The first thing he put on the list for becoming a Great Golfer: #1. Be born rich.

That's really not in the cards. I've never walked off a course, but I have stopped keeping score and convinced myself - this is just practice - when things went completely haywire as some people have mentioned. I don't even think I have the constitution to turn down a round of golf if I don't have something very worthwhile to do instead.

If you play the game long enough to develop a swing then it's inevitable that you're going to be playing long enough to lose it from time to time. But quitting just doesn't seem reasonable because you know that you can hit the ball.

Play the cheaper, easier courses until you find your swing if the wallet need some stress relief, but for the love of God man, you can't just quit.

Yea never thought of quitting golf ever...i love it too much. But I've quit on many rounds and turned them into practice rounds.

i wouldnt advise quiting forever maybe a week or 3 break from it helps.

Great post Titleist Gibson 20; it's all there for the OP. Golf, you just have to laugh off the duffs and flubs because you know it comes with the territory, like no other sport. PGA pros and scratch players, no-one is exempt. They just do it a lot less, because they put in the time, and get help when they need it. But they still spray it on the cart path, in the trees, in the water, in the long grass, all over the place. Just watch a few PGA events and have yourself a good laugh of brotherhood, they too, share your pain from time to time, but the wise ones laugh it off, or shrug it off.

I have never actually quit the game, but I have stopped playing. I was playing against this guy from the UK who said he was a 17 hdcp, I was playing off 18, we were playing for $20 and he was clearly a lot lower than a 17.
On the 10th hole he stuck it to about 3ft from about 180yds out and then got on the 530yd par 5 11th in two, I just casually walked up to him gave him his money and told him that his card was marked so to speak and walked off the course.

If I was to see him now I would more than likely beat him, I am now at 14.1 and am playing a little lower than that, maybe our paths will cross again!

    • Love resurrecting this thread! The float-load feel bit and then the old video I think from Mike on how to hit low and high chips were the kickstart to my short game journey, where I play well below my handicap (officially 9.x right now, via arccos I only lose 1 stroke per round to a scratch golfer in my short game). I've spent lots of time with float-load and I can be a sniper inside ~40 yards with my GW and 60*. But I actually just started trying a version of this for like ~40-70 yard shots! 70-115 I have a like hands to belly button height stock partial swing shot that I hit with SW-9i dialed.
    • Played 9 today. Good and bad. Full Swing - Right arm straighter feel needs to be there 100%.  Short Game - Just needs a good couple of practice sessions to polish. Too long of backswing most of the time.  Putting - more straight back and straight through “feel” works well. Hitting center of putting face more.
    • My rule of thumb is a PW for everything from 100 yards in except specialty shots like a flop or a low runner.  I find it easier to eyeball it for distance and swing on feel for the distance I need to hit
    • Day 3: Worked on putting at different distances focusing on matching the backswing and follow-through lengths.
