The rules don't even recognize it as a bunker. A bunker is:

Bunker A "bunker" is a hazard consisting of a prepared area of ground, often a hollow, from which turf or soil has been removed and replaced with sand or the like. Grass-covered ground bordering or within a bunker, including a stacked turf face (whether grass-covered or earthen), is not part of the bunker. A wall or lip of the bunker not covered with grass is part of the bunker. The margin of a bunker extends vertically downwards, but not upwards. A ball is in a bunker when it lies in or any part of it touches the bunker.

If the turf has not been removed then it is't a bunker. It is just deeper grass

through the green .

just looked it up:

You have a handicap of 6 and you have to do some research to confirm that grass is not a hazard? There is not even any such thing as a "grass bunker". It's just a term for a bunker shaped depression.

relax.

How do you discuss the game if you don't know the terminology? Certainly when discussing anything online it reduces the chance for confusion when you know and use the terms which apply to the topic. Not knowing the terminology in golf can get you in trouble with the rules, which is why the Definitions section comes before the Rules section in the rulebook. There is no way that you can properly apply the rules if you don't know the terminology.

lol. god the amount of bullshit you people shit your pants about never ceases to amaze me. believe me when I say I've played this game competitively and have the rules engraved in my head. just cuz i Googled "grass bunker" doesn't mean shit about shit. yes the RULES don't recognize 'grass bunker' but i've heard it being tossed around, thus I did a simple search to clarify.

keep digging that hole there for yourself.....

A hazard will normally have something to show it as a hazard. i.e Red/yellow stakes around it No need to start cursing. And to the other people, stop being stuck up prick's. This might be why people call golf an elitist sport. Somebody asks a question and you act like snobs.

fair enough, i just found it baffling to see that someone would question my game because I googled something. my apologies if i came off brash.

Yes, i do know what a hazard is and to be honest, I Googled grass bunker to give the OP a clear idea. Sheesh

I couldn't care less if you Googled anything... I Google for information about stuff all the time. You

stated that you don't study the terminology of the game. I simply questioned anyone's (not just yours) ability to discuss the game without knowledge of the terminology. Your multiple use of a particular 4 letter word says a lot about your vocabulary. And by the way, in my experience, playing competitively has little to do with knowing the rules. I work as an on course rules official with the Colorado Golf Association, and I don't claim to have the rules engraved anywhere. I do carry the rulebook in my golf bag and I know how to use it. When working as an official I also carry the Decisions book. I've attended several multi-day USGA/PGA rules workshops, but I know enough to know that I don't know it all. I almost always refer to the Rules of Golf before making any statement about a rules question here or on any other golf forum.

What was this point for posting this?

When did he question your experience with the rules? no need to start an argument over this.

#1, time to switch to decaf, boys...

#2, there are some former bunkers that they laid turf in and are now just deep holes that used to be a bunker. You could call it a grass bunker and you'd be technically wrong, but only REALLY wrong if you tried to apply the rules that are for bunkers. If you just call it that you're technically incorrect but not breaking any rules. People refer to the "pin" all the time, but that's not technically correct - it's the flag stick. Big whoop!

maybe I loosely used the phrase "study the terminology"

no, i don't sit here and analyze the rule book. i barely have the time to play the game as it is. I don't study the terminology. Howeverm, I'm familiar with the terminologies and rules that are required of me in playing this game and if it is required of me to look something up, I will. but i'll repeat it, i don't "study" it. Since it seems its part of your profession to "study" the terminologies and rules, I'll give you credit for that but again, I know the terminologies that are required of me to play the game, i don't look past that to analyze it. if you do, then all to you. fair enough, i was trying to get a point through in saying that i have the rules "engraved" in my head. you've created a mountain out of a mole hill. i simply looked up a term (that isn't even in the official rule book) and someone questioned my game on it. I reacted a bit brash and made a general statement about how i don't study the terminology and perhaps I should've worded it differently but you've somehow managed to take that and state that i don't belong on this forum to discuss anything golf related because of my unfamiliarity with "grass bunkers." I suggest that you take a step back and refrain yourself from overanalyzing and making assumptions based on stuff peope say tongue in cheek.

The course description for

The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass makes reference to grass bunker/s 15 times. Personally I think there are such things as grass bunkers. If a course designer specified and references a design feature as a grass bunker, I'm ok with the terminology in that context.

fair enough, i just found it baffling to see that someone would question my game because I googled something.

IF I was playing with someone and he said he played off 6, I'd be extremely surprised if I was in what is commonly called a grass bunker and he said words to the effect of "I'm not sure if you are allowed to ground your club there, because it might be a hazard. I'll check at the pro shop and see if you're OK". I'd probably die of a heart attack. I question the handicaps of people who say things (like this) which would indicate very strongly that they have played very little if any competition golf. Just like the ones here off low handicaps who "don't get" the stroke and distance rule or don't understand that the moment you take a gimmee in anything other than match play you have not had a legitimate round of golf for scoring and handicapping purposes.

edit: eh, whatever. if you don't believe that i am a 6 handicap based on typing "Looked it up" then fair enough. let's move on.
