Played yesterday in a grueling round from 9:45 Am to 3:30 PM....the course was backed up a bit!!

This is worth every penny!!! What an incredible course, but man is it challenging!!!! Played of the blue tees, the par 3's were specially tough. On the front9 you spend half the time flying over water. Here are some notable holes ...

1st hole you have to carry 200 yards to make it to dry ground, and then keep it to the right to stay out of water....I took mu own analysis way to far....I seemed to find my way back to the right fringe on every shot!!

3rd Hole is a par 3 182 from the blues, with over the water carry of 145, not a real big deal except that you have about 100 ft of mangrove left and right of tee box...if your shot is anything but straight you will be in the water....I hit a branch on the left hand side that deflect travel; I ended about 60 yards out in the water...

4th hole form Blues you are looking at 618 yard par 5 that requires about 220 yards off the drive straight out, with very little room for error.. mangroves to the right, and water to the left..at around 240, you have a left and right fairway bunkers that demand a very controlled drive.

8th hole a beautiful 145 yard par 3 with about a 20 to 30 ft elevated green, that slopes down back towards the tee box. This is an incredible hole...you are completely surrounded by vegetation...anything outside of the green will roll down, and there is a mean left side bunker with a 3 ft wall to clear. I was able to get my shot to with in 3 ft to the flag Very rewarding hole.

10th hole amazing...slice off the tee and you end up in the water, adjust your second shot a little left, and you end in water...

12th hole this is the most famous hole of the course....its 155 yards over to water just to get to the edge of the green.... I had the distance, was heading straight at the pin...and some how I hooked it at the end (i blame on the wind ), and ended up on the water.

13th, 14th, and 15th are pretty plain by comparison, but worth the challenge. 15th, requires a 145 yard drive to clear mangroves into the open fairway. My first par of the day (par 4)

16th hole has a mean dogleg left, water along the right had side, bunkers to the left of the fairway about 220 out....and terrain ends at about 280. Very nice!!!!!

17th hole 195 yards par 3...incredible, just make sure that you don't stray left or right, as there is not much room for error...any deviation results in lost balls into the mangroves. I hit the distance, with 3h, but was way left...tried to get the the ball...didn't find mine, I say about 8 within reach...then the mosquitoes attacked wow!!!!

18th hole Incredible!!! 485 par 5...reachable in 2 if you are long hitter....careful with the green and green side bunker, as you will have to face some challenging lips to make it out. The green is very long, and tiered the right side of the green will slope towards the bunkers I made it about 50 yards from the green on my second shot...skulled my third into the first sand trap, slapped my way out with my fourth, leaving me with a 45 ft up hill, which a nailed....only to have it slide down to the second green side bunker....on my sixth shot got it out and about 3 footer from the pin, for a short tap....a 7!!!! arg the frustration!!!!!

Bottom line, this is a great course, worth every penny!!!! But a few things to consider....Take lots of balls if you have a HC greater than 20. I lost 7, my buddy lost 14...Use a lot of sunblock and make sure is of a high spf if you plan to play during the noon hours...it's brutally hot, and take it with you for re-applies! Take mosquito repellent in which ever format you like because you will need it...and take a big can because you will have to reapply several times.....tee box on 14 was murder!!!

I had issues with consistency in putting because i felt some green running fast and others slow a several people agreed back at the 19th! Bottom line it was a great experience, one I hope to repeat, but not before putting some buckets of practice first.

So what did you shoot? I can't break 90 from the blues... there's a reason why it hosted Q school qualifying last year. That's one of my favorite courses in the Miami metro area.... but disappointed it's not on the premier card.

Lol ...breaking 90!!!! yikes! I played 135, with my adjusted HC of 30.5, the course HC for me would have been 111, so may that's not tooo bad, but it's the second highest score I have ever posted. The first was 143 the very first time I played.

I will need to practice more before I head back.....I started to get into better shape towards the 15th hole, at which time, you can't do anything to save the score!!!

Summer rates are $32 M-Thursday after 10am.

Outstanding deal they have going. This course is brutally tough(for me at least).

Haven't played there but heard the mosquitos and slow play are a deterrent. The latter is to be expected though considering how big Miami is and how nice that area is.

I also recommend Miami Beach Golf Club which I truly enjoy. Not sure if they have any deals like Crandon but it's well worth the play.

I started volunteering at Crandon a couple of months ago. I'm a Ranger on Saturdays. For 8 hours of volunteer work I get unlimited playing privileges & range balls. Pretty damn sweet deal.

A couple of weeks back we had an extra hazard on the cart path about 200 yards off of the first tee -

My advice when playing this course -

One, it plays longer than what the scorecard says. We are at sea level, the fairways are somewhat soft, and we have a constant breeze, usually from the east (the ocean is only a half mile away). It's 6500 from the whites, which is perfect for me. I see guys going back to the blues (about 6800) and they simply do not have the game to be playing from back there - 6800 will play like 7100. And forget the black (back) tees unless you're a pro. From the back tees it's the third-toughest public course in the country behind Bethpage Black & Torrey South. 76.5 rating, 151 slope.

The wind is blowing harder than you think. What 'appears' to be a one-club wind is more like 2 or even 3. Case in point, the 12th hole - the par 3 over water. The card says 174 from the whites. It plays like 190. Trust me. If you take your 6 iron out there & hit it pure, don't be surprised if your next shot is from the drop area.

It's a second-shot course. Tee areas are pretty generous, but most of the greens are well bunkered. It demands well-struck approach shots.

It's South Florida. The greens are very VERY grainy. Read the grain.

Or better yet-Read the slope and realize that grain doesnt affect the roll of the ball much. Mark sweenys taught those of us who still try to learn that much.[quote name="zipazoid" url="/t/36500/crandon-park-miami-fl#post_938680"] It's South Florida. The greens are very VERY grainy. Don't you think that's obvious?

Just enough to miss the putt if you don't take it into account.

    • Some background information before you vote... I run a weekly game on Saturdays and Sundays with anywhere from 8-12 guys. Handicaps in my group range anywhere from 1 to 16. Expected pace of play at my course is right at 4 hours. Anything more and its frowned upon. We do not get the earliest tee times of 8am, because the course does me a favor by allowing me to have standing tee times without having to call every week. We have 9:00-9:10-9:20 every weekend.  This morning we had 7 guys, so I sent off a 3some (me included) and the last 4 guys to follow. On the 3rd hole I noticed that there was a 2some in front of us on 4 tee, and one of the guys took 5 practice swings just to top his driver maybe 4 feet. It was still on the tee box. He reteed and pulled one about 60 yards left. No biggie, golf is hard no matter how good or bad you are.  The 2some was not very good, so they were having a hard time keeping  up with the 4some in front of them. I texted the assistant pro (close buddy) in the pro shop and he came out and asked the 2some to try and keep pace or let our 3some through. We waited on every shot on 4-5-6 and finally on 7 green we hurried to the 8th tee only for them to look back at us then drive off. The issue was they were waiting for the 4some to get on the green before they would tee off, and then come nowhere close to hitting it 200 yards. On the 9th tee I finally said, "hey guys, do you mind if we play through? We will get through that 4some no problem and you wont see us again" They said sorry, but the 4some is not allowing them to play faster and that they couldnt let us through. At that point I said, you're a 2some, and 2 hours for 9 holes is not on pace. You need to push the guys in front of you so they know to let people through.  At the turn the assistant pro let us through, and we played through the 4some on 11 without them missing a beat. Ended up playing in 2 hours and 55 mins, even with the hold up (all three of us shot sub 80 rounds). After the round I thank the assistant pro for allowing us to play through, and mentioned that 2 hours for a 2some was not on pace. He told me that they complained that I was pressuring them to push the group in front of them, and that he was a tennis member who they would like to join as a golf member. The assistant pro said he has been giving one of them lessons, and that 2 hours probably should be their pace. I replied with " I have no problem with anyone shooting 120 on a Sunday morning, golf is golf, but when there is a faster group behind its golf courtesy to let them through"  I dont really care what they think, and honestly if they can get around in less than 4 hours Id be glad to have them play in my weekly game. Was I wrong for pushing a group of not very good golfers?
    • Fired up the smoker and plan to watch in about 35 minutes.  Can't wait to see this match go down.  My money is on Rory, but we shall see.........   @natureboy - How about that 133 YARD ;) wedge shot yesterday into the elevated green with the pin placement in the front.  Mortals wouldn't have a chance at that pin....
    • Not a smart bet IMO.  Just for the fact that Spieth plays so well at the Masters.  I would take that bet on all the major excluding the Masters.  No one in their right mind would bet against Spieth at the masters, 2nd, 1st and 2nd place finishes in his last 3 attempts.  Just saying.....  I believe he will win another Major, @ the Masters.
    • Yes, some ranges with limited space use "restricted flight" balls that don't fly nearly as far as regular golf balls (60% sounds about right).
