Im a college junior so i was in hs a few years ago. The thing is, high school is not hard at all. If you a getting below a's and b's you are simply not trying. Personally I think the idea of buying him something if he brings up his grades is a stupid idea. You should take something away until he gets them up. I think buying him something should be reserved for something where he goes above and beyond. Getting a's and b's isnt hard so it should be considered something that he should be doing. Honestly you need to really do NOTHING to get a d in high school. He is more than capable of doing well, he just isnt working.

Two other little points that I wanted to comment on:

-Why are alarm bells ringing because of church history. Ive been in history classes and learned all about islam and judeism but never heard anyone complain about that. There is so much discrimination against Christianity in our society. Church history is just that, history. No one is promoting it or forcing it upon anyone, they are just reviewing it from a historical prespective. But in our society we act like its something evil that we cant even talk about.

-And to the person that said he did well, wow. A gpa in the low 2's is not good at all, especially in high school. At the college i go to (35,000 students) the average gpa is 2.93. Hes got a gpa almost a fulll point below people taking way harder classes. No he did not do well, unless you consider the 15th percentile doing well.

my thoughts and how my parents handled me in this situation..

All I'm taking away from this post is grades don't matter. Is that the message you want to be sending this kid? I'm guessing your going into the military from your avatar. You know you will have to go to Technical School, and study your ass off. High school is where you develop good study habits, and learn how to take tests, which is something you will see plenty of in your training.

I don't want to derail this thread, but would somebody explain to me, using logic and not emotion, why studying Church History "sets alarm bells ringing".

Tell him if he gets his grades up and works hard he can go to any school in the country and get a good scholarship. Also if you have good grades you are more likely to be picked up for college athletics

I actually didn't do fantastically in High school till my last 2 years when i was studying stuff I actually was interested in (physics, chemistry, Calculus, Applicable Maths, English) and I ended up with High B's and A's. I too went to a Catholic School but don't really count Religion as a subject. Plus I played cricket, golf, football, Indoor Cricket and still did well and got in the top 5% of the state for academic results and am in first year engineering at uni. Just tell him to get through the early years until he enjoys his study then he will do well.

I'm pretty sure the OP asked for advice on dealing with his son, not if we approved of religious views he may or may not have.

OP, how's it going? Any progress?

I went to a catholic high school and I hated it. I graduated with a measily 2.4 gpa. I am now in college in my 3rd year and I have a 3.1 GPA and made the dean's last the last two semesters. If he isn't pushing himself to do better on his own, what makes you think he will do anything on his own in college? He needs to learn for himself, not forced.

I am a sophmore in a private school also.
I play golf and basketball for my school and can see your son's situation.
I just try to remember this:
"School comes before sports"
This doesn't mean make him quit all sports and focus only on school.
To me it just means let him play what he wants to play, but make sure when he commits to those sports, he can also commit to school. If not, it isn't meant to be. That's my opinion
Good luck

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
