I know its been a while that this topic has been commented on..in my search for better contact I have realised I choke the club to death and feel this is going to be detrimental to my swing.

Would I be right in saying that holding the club too tightly would restrict the natural bottoming out of the clubface and holding off with the release (lightly gripping the club will release naturally.

I use a similar drill where but instead place a alignment stick into the end of the grip, allows you to grip the club normally.

It depends on what you mean by tightly. You have to have a firm grip on the club in order to properly control it. It's more important to maintain a consistent grip pressure, and that grip pressure should be a little on the firm side, if anything.
