My golf league is 9 holes, and having played the course hundreds of times I know it like the back of my hand and generally shoot in the high 30's. On most weekend rounds I play at different courses I'll shoot in the low 80's, occasionally break 80 and might have a 90 mixed in here or there - so I usually hover between an 8 and 10 index. Then this happenned:

I played my 9 hole league two weeks ago and shot 35 (3 birdies, 3 pars, 3 bogies) on the Par 35 side.

Headed on a golf trip and shot 90, 87, 84 on 3 legit courses.

Came back to league last week and shot 32 (-2) on the par 34 side and actually missed an 8 footer for birdie and burned the edge on a 20 footer on the last hole - making those would have been a 30, LOL.

The question is, my previous best round - probably 8 years ago was 74 and recently think I had a 77 last year. Posting these two 9 hole scores would combine for a 67 - and according to the USGA this would be considered an IMPOSSIBLE score for someone with my Index.

If its real you are supposed to post it.

And I believe IMPOSSIBLE is only examined if its a tournament score (GAM anyway).

I know what you mean. 2 years ago i had two nines on the same course that would have combined for a -5 66. The nines where shot over a week apart. There is no way in hell im shooting a 66 under normal circumstances so i never posted the second nine. It wasnt an accurate determination of what my true skill was. If it combined to a 68 or 69 i probably would have posted it because ive shot those scores over a continuous round before.

Selectively posting scores could be argued as sand bagging. If you shot it then you are capable of it. just sayin'.

Well, maybe this worked out OK. I posted the 35, which then got combined with a previous 9 hole score of 38 (total 73) I had floating out there. This week we play hardest 9 where I generally shoot 39-41 so chances are that will combine with the 32 to come in the low 70s.

Im not capable of a 66 under normal circumstances. If i posted that second 9 it probably would have bumped me to around +1, at the time. Im not that good.

I wouldn't, just because you don't know what fatigue, pin position, ect.. will be if there on different days.

More than likely, it would have been mathematically softened in the averaging. IMHO, in the spirit of handicapping, selectivity is not an option.

Selectively posting scores

Fixed that for you.

Guys, if you shot lower than you think you "should've" based on your handicap, it means your handicap is too high. Posting the low scores does what the handicap system is designed to do: Bring it down to more accurately reflect your potential. I don't understand the mind set of "Oh, I didn't really shoot that score, it was impossible". You shot it, so it's obviously possible. And the fact that it was a 9-hole score is completely irrelevant. Sure, lot's of people shoot better 9s than 18s - that's because it's harder to keep up the stamina and focus for the full 18. But if you *did* keep that stamina and focus, you *could* put together 2 good 9's - that's why it's called your "potential". If you have the potential to shoot x over 9 holes, you have the potential to shoot 2x over 18. Post all your scores. That's the rule. It's not rocket surgery, and it's not optional (at least not if you want to claim an accurate handicap.)

....but that isn't the point of a handicap? You should post all your scores, and your handicap will reflect that. Weather or not you think your capable of shooting that score is irrelevant....

Fair enough, but then you might want to let

Dean Knuth know that his system is broken. And if you play in any tournaments where you're given strokes, your competitors might appreciate a heads up on what you're doing.

I shot back to back 39's this week. I've never broken 80, but I know I could, does that mean I shouldn't post one of them? My best 18 hole score is an 82, and that was on the most difficult course I've ever played. I dunno about the rest of you, but I rarely have time to play a full 18 hole round, usually only once or twice a year, so I have to rely on 9 hole scores for my handicap. I just don't understand your reasoning....

What would have the differential been. The course where you play your league must be easier than other places that you play. What is the slope/rating of your league course. If I had shot a 66 on the course where I play in my league, it would have only been a differential of 1 even though I would have been 6 under par. Make sense??

i dont understand this. your supposed to post all your scores. i really dont understand why the guy wouldnt post his two 39's im sure as a 13 hcp you shoot anywhere from 38-44 on 9 holes in your normal rounds? but it makes sense why some scores on 9 holes would be lower considering you would be playing the same side, i work at a private 9 hole course with 2 sets of tee boxes, are you saying if i shoot 32 32 i shouldnt post it because iv never shot 64 there. i can shoot 32 in a normal round on a good day but i wont shoot it again on the back, so i shouldn't post the two scores if i shoot 32 twice?

Of course I posted it, I post all my scores. I was wondering the same thing, why wouldn't you post it simply because it was a 9 hole score....
