Is washing your grips bad?

I clean my clubs sometimes, and while i'm at it i clean the grips off as well. It makes them really sticky.

I think it could be bad for them sometimes though because eventually it might cause them to wear down faster.

Do you think i should stop washing my grips.

No cleaning them is fine.
Make sure you wash whatever you put them off with warm water afterwards

Nothing like a sticky grip...keep 'em clean and tacky.

When you wash the grips, use a liquid soap which does not contain lanolyn or skin softener. Softeners just put oil back on the grip.

Also, watch your snacking on the course. Make sure you don't smear chocolate or corn syrup on your grip by accident.

If they are normal rubber Golf Pride style grips, it's fine. I use Dawn and hot water on mine every so often - works like a charm. However, there are some Winn grips that are very adversely effected by water. If they are made by Winn I would check on their website to make sure it's ok. They used to have very detailed care instructions online.

I use rubbing alcohol on my grips. You don't even need to dry them, the alcohol evaporates. I know there are certain grips that should ONLY be washed with alcohol, but I have done this for several years with a variety of different grips and it does a great job. I believe it keeps the grips from deteriorating as quickly, as well.
