A couple weeks ago I realized I was never hittin down on the ball. I have since tried to fix this and have had some success. Before i guess i was just kinda picking at the ball and before my 6iron and my hybrid were my best clubs in the bag. Now I cant hit anything longer than the 7iron. I am now hitting all the short irons better then ever and if feels awesome. Now im just looking for some tips that might help me with the longer irons to be a ble to hit them again.

Typical shots with other clubs:
6 iron- duck hook or roller
5 Iron- roller
4 Iron- roller
3 Hybrid hit well with slight hook or big draw 15yrds to 30 yrds

Any suggestions I can try on my next time to range are greatly appreciated.

this is why i don't really like the advice ''hit down on the ball.'' i prefer to think of it as hitting through the ball. to actually hit down would require you to come over the top, and that is probably where your pull hooks are coming from. you need to still keep your head back and just follow through and don't try to scoop the ball, gravity will take care of the hitting down part.

Nest time im out I will make sure to get a video. my buddy has taken some videos before but that was before I started to adjust my swing.

I've heard of hitting through the ball from many sources.... which I think is more or less the same as "let the ball get in the way of your swing".

Then, recently, I came across a video in which the instructor said something to the effect of "put your energy into the ball, not down the line". For me, that thought seems somwhere in between 'hit down' and 'hit through', but I realize it's very subjective and I'm no expert. Just throwing that out there in case it helps.

Been playing just a few months but I play almost every day.

What's in my bag: Distance Master Driver, Maltby Trouble Out woods/hybrids, Maltby KE4 Irons (all assembled by me so I can never blame my equipment).

When hitting your irons/wedges, try not to think of it as down on it. Think of it more like sweeping the ball, but trying to make a divot. The moment I tried actually hitting down on it, I began pulling the ball and my timing was way off.

some advice that i can give you is next time you are at the range with your longer irons 6+ choke down on it a inch or even more. it will help you out with contact. Once you get your consistancy back with those long irons work your way back up the grip.

Without a video it is hard to give any tips, but I would wager you don't get the weight forward enough.

When I feel I am getting my weight through the shot, but spin is iconsistent it is because I don't keep my hands underneath the club because I am gettin overly active with my hands. I feel that hitting down does not come from your hands, but from the transfer of weight and the straightening of your arms, especially the right.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
