I managed to get a set of 1983 Taylor Made EL-1s 2 iron through Pitching Wedge. I put a brand new set of Project X flighted shafts, but I had to cheat a little bit, I had to put the shafts in like they were 3-GW. Does anyone have an explanation that could explain this? I'm puzzled.

In what way did you have to put them in differently? Your post doesn't explain the problem.

Rifle Project X flighted shafts, come pre cut to length to fit each iron. I tried to put the two-iron head on the 2-iron shaft, it wouldn't fit, but when I put the 2-iron head on the three-iron shaft it did fit.

did you sand them down and everythign because there supposed to be tight

I sanded the shafts down, i then realized what the problem was, there was a lot of old epoxy in the hosels of the irons. I then proceeded to use a little extra cleaner on the hosels and got the proper shaft/head combination.
