Titleist AP1s?

Hi. I have a set of Taylormade R7 CGB Max clone irons. Now, I'm not the most consistent golfer, although I can usually strike the ball pretty well, or terribly good either. (Handicap is probably in the 20s.) Anyway, I was wondering if I would be good enough to play the AP1s. I have been reading up on them, and have read that they are "forgiving, but still have a lot of feel." What does the concept of feel mean? That they are workable? I haven't had a chance to try them, because I live in a small town, and we don't have any golf stores here. Might go out just for that. Anyway, thanks in advance.

"Feel" is what impact feels in your hands/arms and how it sounds.
You cannot really shape a shot like you can with a blade, but they do allow trajectory control to a certain extent. But that also depends a lot on what shaft you get.
They are the most forgiving Titleist irons made. I certainly know I love mine.

As far as being good enough to play them, I am a 22 handicap and I haven't had any issues with beign good enough to play these irons. The biggest thing is to get clubs that you have confidence with when you stand over the ball.

I just got my ap1s a week ago and i agree with this completely. I went from a super game improvement iron to these, and they were just perfect.

I have the '08 version and although I do like them I wouldn't say they have a lot of feel to them. Muted would be the way I would describe the feeling. You can tell when you strike one solid but normally I have to look at the club face to see the impact mark. I have hit the 710 version and in my opinion there was not much of a difference between the two versions. Just my opinion. But it is a solid club so I don't think you can go wrong.

One question I have for those that have the GW is what is your opinion of the GW? I have had this club in the bag for over a year now and it's taking me a while to get comfortable with it. I seem to have some trouble dialing in the distance with this club and I have not had this issue with any of the other clubs in the set. I'm giving it through the rest of the season to see if the light goes off but I may go back to my older Vokey 52* wedge that seemed to give me a more consistant result.

I can't really compare to other clubs, as I have only tested them in bays, never on the course....with that said, I love my AP1's. I got a great deal from a relative...$200 for a 6mo old set ('08), with the graphite shafts. I have been playing since Jan last year, and when I got started, some of the Pros that I talked to in Golf galaxy told me to sell them that they were too much club for me....I didn't buy the reason, and kept them. I'm glad I did! I think these are great for any "serious" player. By that I mean, being serious about playing and improving. I am currently a 30.5 HC, but I have been as low as 26 last year when I was playing 2 to 3 x a month, now is more like 1 a month if I'm lucky!

These clubs are very forgiving and certainly allow for playability...you may not get the same response as MB but I don't think you will get that from any CB iron. These are great clubs, If you want to play with something that will be with you for a while, as I suspect my AP1's will at least accompany me until I drop to low teens of single digit HC.

      Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.

      I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.

      Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.

      In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.

      Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
