Last season was my first full season with a 4w in the bag. I often still carried a 3w as well (13.5), but found I was much more consistent with the 17* 4w then the 3w from both the tee and the deck. The 3w is sitting this season out.

The 17* Ping TiSi Tec fairway wood I have is a 5 wood. I don't know what the criteria is for a manufacturer calling one 17* wood a 4 and the other a 5, but I do know that I conistently hit it well.

I carry a 4W and a 3H. They're similar in distance, but I can get about 20 more off the fairway from the 4W. The 3H allows longer shots from not so great lies.

After reading this, I had to check mine--its an R9 17* 4W.

Incidentally, how do I list my clubs in my sig--anyone?

Go to the "Forum Actions" pulldown at the top, click on the "General Settings" link, and look for the "Edit Signature" link on the left. Don't know how to get those cool product logos that others have in their signature lines, though.

Got it, and thanks

The logos are listed under the smileys. I was a newbie, but that's fixed now

you just resurrected a three year old post, but I'm glad you did. I thought I was crazy and alone because I just took out my 3w and put in a 58* lob wedge. Wedges are now 50*, 54*, & 58* (9i is 47*). 4w (17*) is in the bag between 12* driver and 21* hybrid. I don't feel so crazy and alone anymore. Thanks!

I was having trouble with 3 wood and went with a 2 hybrid

No Gripit, You are not crazy and perhaps the "Fantastic Four Wood" should be resurrected! Good enough for Sarazen... Truth is for the distance, there is not a great difference between a 3-wood (most are 15° +/-) & a 16°,16.5, 17° 4-wood, but for me accuracy is more important than distance and the 4-wood is perfect. My 3-wood, 5-wood days were too inconsistent. I just picked up the Ping G20: Nice ball flight, straight down the pipe and it looks to be a versatile weapon. Combine with my Tour Edge XCG5 22° 4-hybrid and I've got the "distance" thing covered. And if I don't hit the green, I'm mostly right in front & 3 Cleveland wedges 51°, 57°, 64° give me lots of options for getting up and down. My irons are Cleveland TA5 5-PW. Yep, that's 13 clubs. All I really need. I've been through the 2, 3, 4 iron thing, 3/5/7 wood thing, 16°/19°/22° driving irons, and finally settled on this configuration. I like your setup. What driver, 4-wood, and hybrid are you using? ~George Shot

Hey, George Shot, thanks for your verification of my un-craziness. Nice clubs you got! I am really happy with my bag right now. I'm pretty slow to change things and update I guess because I get comfortable! My driver is a Cleveland Launcher SL290 @ 12*, R flex. Just got it this year. I tipped the shaft a little and it feels really solid. The hybrid you asked about? (lol) It's a "Tiger Shark" 21* I picked up for around $50 about eight or nine years back. Still using the stock "UST" shaft it came with. I think the shafts they sold in those clubs must have been very soft; mine is marked stiff, but I can hit the snot out of it and have since I got it. The 4w is an old Adams Ovation. It's also got the stock (Aldila NV?) shaft marked stiff. Neither the hybrid nor the 4w shafts play like they're stiff, though and I think I can hit my 4w just as far if not farther than the 3w.

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
