Just picked up the Garmin Approach G5 GPS, this device is simple and very easy to use, it has just one button, on and off, the rest is touch screen and works perfectly, I highly recommend this device to anyone looking for a golf GPS

I had the skycaddie SGX, but after the 3rd unit they sent me (the other 2 units locked up on downloads and had to be sent back), I thought why bother and returned it for the Garmin and I couldn't be happier

I really don't need a GPS (I only play 2 courses with any regularity, and I know them well enough to pretty much know the yardage from everywhere), but the Garmin G3 and G5 caught my eye for a couple reasons. First, they looked to have good course support with free data (no subscriptions or download fees), which was nice. Second, they run on standard batteries. That's nice because I could always carry a spare set and if I run out, just swap over and not be hosed if I forget to recharge. My main worry was how long they'd run --- it seems that dedicated batteries usually have better life. Any thoughts on that?

Yea Zeg, I played 18 today on a fresh set of batteries, 4 hours later I checked the battery meter and it showed the batteries were still full, so I left it on to see how long the batteries will last ..... it's been on for 22 hours now and the batteries are still going strong with half life left, I'm using the new energizer ultimate lithium batteries, I'm in the market for a rechargeable lithium-ion batteries which I hope will last as long as these non rechargeable ones

My brother has the G3 and can get 4 rounds of golf in with the batteries supplied, but there is nothing left after that last round. I'm sure as the batteries get some life to them, they will only last for 3 rounds.

Just make sure you check your specs. many of the rechargeable types can be as much as .25 volts less than the non rechargeable. I haven't looked at LI batteries, so I'm not quite sure about them.

The Energizer Lithium AA's are the best thing going for a golf GPS. My GolfLogix GPS-8 gets up to 6 rounds from a pair of batteries. The final cost winds up about the same as for the alkaline, but I don't have to pack as many batteries around with me. A 4 pack of lithium's can keep me going for a month. One of the reasons why I bought the GolfLogix is because it uses AA batteries which can be bought anywhere.

Just got the G5 a month ago after having the Golf Logix. I play a lot of different courses. I like not reloading courses and managing that all the time. No subscription costs.
Another plus is a graphical image of the hole layout. Great for first time course play. gives the distance to any point on the screen, yardages anywhere on the green, just touch. You can also keep score and store and view those scorecards later on a PC via USB cable using a browser. Measure shot distances and assign to each club in your bag and keep track of averages. Good stuff.

The downside is, all of the courses are not available, and updates are only quarterly.

I've checked the courses that are unavailable, and it's just as I thought, places I'd never play or even want to play, lol

BTW, 8 rounds on lithium batteries and still going
