I came across this article, where it talks about photographers packing a flare gun or starter pistol in their gear to ensure it doesn't get lost. The flare gun/starter pistol is only considered a weapon by the TSA, and accordingly the TSA will take some extra steps to make sure it doesn't get lost. These things only cost about $15-20 from any outdoors sporting good store.

I've got a couple flights planned for later this summer with my clubs and probably won't bother with any of this, but I'm curious to see some of your techniques for keeping your clubs safe.

Best thing you can do for your clubs on the airlines is get a decent travel bag. Lost is lost no matter what, but if they're going to get chucked around you at least stand a better chance with a good hard case or a Club Glove etc.

Just get a decent lockable hard case-I got one last summer for around $55-$60. Put your clubs in their bag, inside the case with a towel or two, really nothing to worry about.

I just ordered an Ogio monster travel bag. I hope that is the answer to safe travel. The hard cases sound nice too.

If you are travelling overseas, check your luggage allowances, I just travelled into Asia for work on a discount economy (coach) ticket and they wnated $256 per sector for em to take my clubs (I had 5 sectors) interestingly that was more than the price of me flying the sectors :). In any case I elected to elave my clubs at the airport, the main issue was the weight of my travel cover, when I got home, i invested ina stand bag and purchased a travel cover thats a little like a garment bag, its very light, durable and lockable. I just put covers on my irons, wrap the whole bag in bubble wrap and put it in the lockable cover, its safe, light and cheap and best of all, it allows me to travel with my clubs for free.

Working in sound reinforcement, I come across a lot of cases and such. I have an SKB hard case for my clubs, it's got a lifetime warranty. I don't generally like SKB cases as much for musical equipment, but for golf clubs, they are durable enough.

Club Glove Last Bag got my sticks to Africa in one piece. The outside of the case looked like it had been mauled by an angry hyena on the way, but all was well within.

Best thing you can do for you clubs is get a good traveil bag! Try to hard a hard cover with soft padding on the inside... Another thing that I would recomend doing is putting a towel inbetween in club heads, so they can not bang againts each other and get caught up againt one another, in a bad case if that happend you could get a shaft snaped.
