Kapalua is such a great place to play.
The Plantation course is where the Mercedes Championship will be played in a few weeks. We have gone the week after PGA is there and the condition is incredible. It is cool to see all the divots the pro's take and they are all in the same spots on the fairways.
I particularly like the Bay course. The 5th & 6th holes are magnificent as they stretch out over the ocean. The 16th hole makes you feel like you are in Japan. It is an awesome track.

I got lucky enough to play a little known private course near Wilmington, NC named

Eagle Point is amazing... not even sure if it's fair to be on a 'great places to play' list since it's so hard to get on. Was lucky myself this past spring...hopefully will get an invite back next year. Old North State is another great course that you need a member invite for as well. As far as public courses here in NC, gotta love Pine Needles...all the beauty and layout challenge of #2 but with 'sand dollar' humped greens instead of turtle back greens :)

Wow another 146 slope course. Man they are tough. I played Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney Texas (where they qualify for the US open and make it with a score of 73) and that was the most difficult I have seen (146).
The 18th handicap hole was a par 3 - water along left - tree 60 yards from tee on right - and 206 yards long. That was ranked the easiest!!

If you ever want to play a truly difficult course try The Ranch Golf Club in the eastern foothills of San Jose, CA, from the back the slope is 152, oh . . . and bring a couple dozen balls, if the wind is strong you might need more.

It was a favorite course until it bit me one time too many. It is stunningly beautiful with many shots from hill tops across gorges onto ribbon thin fairways. The real problem is the greens, very hard to hold, can find yourself in impossible places with some severe multi-tiered undulations. If your game is a little bit off the place can destroy your confidence.

Most people I've talked to say they won't play there, and certainly it will play havoc with your handicap. Even from the white tees it is brutal, but it is worth playing it at least once, such a radical course!

Oh yes - " The " Pine Valley Golf club, rated #1 every year by golf digest for the best golf courses in the world. I'm sure it must be awesome but noone can get on it. I heard they only have about 180 members and they rarely play. I used to live in NJ and never sniffed an invite to play there.
I did however get to play a hole from there. I played the tour 18 in Dallas and they had a duplicate of one of the holes on the back 9. It was a cool hole. I can only imagine what the rest of the course would be like.

Primm Valley GC on the California / Nevada border is a great offering. The green fees in the off season are reasonable, and if you stay at one of the Primm Valley Casinos you can usually get pretty good deals for a room and a round. I only played the Desert Course and a few holes of the Lake Course (It got dark) but the course is in excellent condition and very challenging.

I am also a huge fan of Phantom Horse down in Phoenix. It is about $100 a round unless you want to brave the summer heat, then you can get on for like $28.

My uncle who i see like every 5 years is a member. I absolutely HATE him, but he asked me to play with him and i jumped at it. It was the best course I have ever seen, much less played.

haha, He's now turned in to my FAVORITE uncle haha. We played at about 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon, but we played the whole course without seeing a single person.

i wasnt

complaining about there not being anybody else, I just said that to point out how few members they have. I consider it one of the world's best golf courses, that pretty much gone to waste. My Uncle plays there maybe like once a month, and the rest of the members hardly play that. It's really a waste of a good course.

It you're ever in the Vail Valley (Vail, Edwards, Beaver Creek, Colorado area), take the time and the cash to play a course called Sky Creek Ranch. Play the Fazio course if you can. It might not be on the 100 best played list, but I promise you that it will be a favorite top 10 course on your list ever.

  • 2 weeks later...
I played the Denver Omni, which had some great elevation changes. I can't even imagine a course in Vail. Everytime I'm in the Vail area it is full of snow and I find myself paying the highest price in the world for a lift ticket.

I played Whirlpool in Niagra Falls (Canadian side) which was a great experience. The CPGA was going to play there 2 or 3 days after I played it so the rough was up high and the course was in perfect condition. I played horrible but still had a great time. The wind on certain holes could have easily been mistaken for a hurricane.
