Look, I know the US did not play well; Phil looked ABSOLUTELY dreadful. I mean, this is the second ranked player in the world!

#18 @ Winged Foot has definitely affected his play - he is just not the same guy. DiMarco's play was not stellar either (which surprised me), but he is not a major winner.

Can Phil win another major? TGC thinks that Phil will be 'OK' once the Masters rolls around next year.

In my humble opinion, It believe that Phil so humiliated himself at Winged Foot that it appears he has taken the ultra conservative approach in order to avoid mistakes. He could also be suffering depression and lack of ambition as a result. If this is the case, he may need to seek some professional counseling to get himself out of his funk before he can get some of his edge back.

I'm not reading much into his struggles at the Ryder Cup. Phil just doesn't like playing golf after The PGA Championship. His last Ryder Cup wasn't much better.

If he struggles early next season, then I'll admit the Winged Foot incident has affected him. But as of now, I just think he is in the "no care" zone. I'll tell you what I think when the Bob Hope rolls around next season.

That's giving Phil too much of a pass. He had two majors AND the Ryder Cup post-Winged Foot. It's affected him or it's not - giving him the benefit of four months off to recover doesn't make much sense to me.

It's either affected him or it hasn't. I think it has.

I agree with you Erik... I think he has had plenty of time since the "incident" to recover. I'll also wager he already had professional counseling since then. He will recover but it will just take time.

I think Phill will be just fine.I also think if he had his way he would have skipped the Ryder Cup but he realized the grief he would have gotten. His sister got married just before and when he is with the family golf finishes second.Right or wrong that is how he chooses to live his life.

heres the problem with Phil. He wants to be recognized as one of the greatest, watch early press conferences of him talking about Tiger and his many handlers proclaiming how good he is. If he wants our respect he needs to play and win when things aren't perfect for him. He needs to grind it out after a grueling major and sponsored schedule. He needs to play the week after losing at the Ryder Cup, he needs to suck it up and put his big girl panties on. He needs to show us that he isn't a spoiled rotten athlete that plays when it suits him. His ability to portray the "Family Man" that plays golf occasionally is not working. His image is one of entitlement and money without the hard work. Right or wrong thats how I see him.

To me Mickelson seems to be complacent, he's got his major monkey off his back and can now just coast. I know that's likely not the case but it sure seems that way to me.

I'm a real big Mickelson fan but I think there's a part of me that used to like rooting for him a bit more before he won a major. That makes no sense I know, you root for a guy to win majors and when he finally does you stop cheering for him? It's hard to say but he's definitely one of my favs and will continue to be so.

He'll bounce back after Winged Foot and will be more inspired than ever to win the 07 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

Looking forward on an unrelated note as I was reaffirming my 07 Oakmont thought I noticed that in 08 Torrey Pines hosts the U.S. Open, what a story for Phil to win at Torrey Pines!

    • Things didn’t work out with the cutting horse barn my wife was working for there in Virginia. Their Texas facility we were supposed to move down to ended up delayed for at least an extra year after they’d had us leave Virginia to meet them down there “shortly”. So we ended up getting some land by her family in Missouri and building a house of our own down here instead. Not as many courses, but there is one 5 minutes from the house that’s only $62/mo for both of us to be members at and other nicer ones within a reasonable drive as well.    @Rick_D I’ll try to remember to let you know when I’m heading up that direction. It may happen more frequently in the coming year since a dealer for a business I started recently is based out of St Charles so making deliveries myself might be more economical than shipping.
    • I don’t know why my swing got so vertical there. That wasn’t normal.    What did you mean by point 3? I get the hip turn portion.
    • It is. So, just 2 and 3 above now. 😄
    • Hopefully this one is better
    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
