if you are just starting there's lots of golf left in your future! I started about 10 years ago and until recently just began to get good enough to really start enjoying golf. Here are my last couple of 18 hole scores.

1. 88
2. 89
3. 85
4. 87

I know these are not blockbuster scores, but staying in the 80's is great progress for me!!!

As of yesterday I've been playing golf for 5 weeks.

I'm kinda embarassed to share it, but my 18 hole average is a remarkably consistent 120. I make my share of bogeys & double bogeys but I always completely blow up at least the first two or three holes and ususally a hole or two on the back nine. Plus if I could improve my putting by 50% I could easily take 10-15 shots off that score.

My mens club tournament scoring average for this summer's 9 rounds was 75.9. My average for all rounds I recorded was 76.1. I got hot in August and it lowered my average.

Been playing golf since I was 9 turned 30 in July. I'd say my average is between 76-84 on most courses. Those scores also depend on how I hit that darn driver...

I know the handicap index should give you an idea, but it's not a perfect system... My avg. score at my home course is 76. My average score anywhere else is more like 80.

My average this year in the 4 rounds I have played was 107.75, so I will go ahead and round up and say 108. This is a little misleading beacuse one of the rounds was at a local par 3 course where par is 55. Here are my scores for all 4 rounds I played.

1) 77 (par 55)
2) 124 (par 71, ugh that looks awful)
3) 118 (par 72)
4) 112 (par 72)

P-funk,
We should play together sometime. Those are my kind of scores and I'm less than two hours away from you in Parkersburg.

I've been hitting a book my boss loaned me, 'Ben Hogan's 5 lessons' or something similar. I've re-built my swing since last Friday and am doing much, much better now. I'm leaving work a little early today to test out my new swing on the course.

We will have to try and work something out. It is a little hard for me right now because I am working night shift at my job, but maybe we can figure something out.

    • Yeah, watched Geoff Ogilvy's bit on Fried Egg about his conversation with some bogey golfer finding #2 most fun to play and the irony in it being so.  Makes sense.
    • So, I think the idea behind it is that the ball is not perfectly smooth (obviously). So, on shorter putts, it is better to hit that point on the ball because it gets the ball into a better roll. You are not compressing the ball with a short putt, so it would act more similar to if you were hitting let's say a 100 sided dice. On longer putts, you might be compression the ball so more of the ball impacts the club face and then that single point doesn't matter.  It might be something he made up, could be a confidence thing, could be a legit thing. Maybe it matters more with how good the greens they putt on.  Also, we are talking about a single point here, and the putter face angle, path, ect.. will change a bit on each putt. So, it isn't like you are hitting that spot exactly in the same way.  Not sure it is worth the effort with so many variables in play.
    • Looking at the aerial, there is very few holes were short is bad. You can always putt from off the green, so it makes the short game easier. I can see where the big number is out more often. It's not really a course where you can easily go low at either. The sand down there is super easy to play out of.
    • Yeah, even Jamie doesn't really push (forward) with the right leg here, so I bumped on his use of that phrase/term early as well. They get away from it, though, and when they show the movements it's more obvious that's not what he's talking about. I sometimes wish there was a better term because, as you note, it often leads to people trying to actually "push" with their right leg.
