I just ordered one as a training aid for the garden but it has not arrived yet.

A basic question but is this net a substitute for the range or is the 'feedback' I will get from the net limited?

what do you mean?

The only feedback you'll get is from your clubhead.

You get virtually no feedback on the shots as far as ball flight goes. If you stand at the same place and hit the same club, you might see some different return balls, but in terms of ball flight, there is none. I would not say it is a substitute for the range, but an extra aid. Seeing the ball flight is still the best way to practice. It works if you got a specific detail you are working on in the swing. Not shaping the ball of course, but hip move, legwork etc.

I did mean in terms of ball flight but the answer looks clear. Still I hope to be able to notice when I hit a big hook otherwise I could be practising a lot of bad shots!

you'd be able to tell if your hitting it sweet.

You should practice with both though. Go to the range and hit the net.

Last year I was slicing and fading all the time. I worked on fixing it this winter, hitting only on a net without any feedback on the ball flight. When I finally got to hit balls at the range in May, I was hooking everything. I had no idea about it when I was hitting on a net, impossible to tell if you can't feel it yourself.

It is a good place I would say to work on specific details, without getting caught up with the ball flight. There are things I work on that don't show itself as well in flight. Since I don't see the flight, I will only judge a swing by how it felt, and also by video, which I was using.

Like I said, it is not an alternative to the range, but a good supplement.

A net won't give you any feedback in terms of ball flight, so you may be practicing some bad habits in that respect.

Where I find the net useful is for working on specific little things. Like not hitting the ball fat or thin, or hitting the ball first then the ground, or not hitting the ball on the toe of the club (seems to be my current problem!). Granted even if I "fix" these problems on the net, I still don't have any idea where the ball is actually going. But in a way that can actually be a good thing because you will focus more on fixing that little problem with you swing and not be so facinated with where the ball goes. The net gives me a platform to work some of the kinks out, and I can then head to the range to sort of put it all together and work on the ball flight part.

The place where i get lessons from is an indoor practice facility. you hit into a net but you have a choice of four different cameras to view your swing with as well as sensors that are in the ground to see where your weight is at. the least you should do is get a camera to view your swing, the hard part is to know what to look for.

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
