Before I ever took a lesson, I had a very loose, sort of John Daly swing. (Past parallel at the top, lots of wrist action...) I was pretty decent at getting the club back into position on the downswing, but, as you might expect, my game would come and go. Some days I had it, some days were a train wreck.

I'm with an instructor now who has simplified my swing tremendously. At first, things felt very mechanic, but I've managed now to improve my tempo and sort of dial it in.

The one problem that keeps sporadically re-appearing is dropping my wrists at the start of my downswing. Sometimes, it's so subtle that I don't even feel it, but the shot is bad and my swing coach points it out.

My question is this: Should I increase my grip tension with my left hand, right hand, or both to keep the wrists from breaking down? I've always heard the looser you handle the club, the more speed you'll generate, but I can't think of any other way to keep the proper wrist angle at the top. Would oversized grips remedy this?

Thanks for any input!!!!

It is the plane or angle in which you start your downswing. ASSUMING YOUR BACK SWING IS GOOD, Swing straight down with back of your hand on the downswing, left or right hand does not matter, you will not lose the wrist cock. Swing inside out and you are fine also, but if you swing the back of your hand outside in and the arm and hands will drop. The feel you should get is like pulling the butt of the shaft down and out toward the ball.

My advice to you is that you start with the back of your hand and swing inside out first until you can make solid contact. It is not exactly the ideal way to swing, but it will get you to feel what the proper plane is.Close your eyes and feel that swing and how that is also moving your hip and shoulder. After you get consistent feel for the hip and shoulder movement, than try to swing with your hip or shoulder leading along the same plane.

OK, you only do it now sporadically, which means you do it correctly as well (I believe you are talking about taking the club to the top and then your wrist angle breaks down causing you to get past parallel and then you have to do some correction on your downswing to get into a decent position). I used to have a problem with getting to the top and regripping with my left which was so hard to get away from. I worked on it with a friend who was a pro and then it only came out now and then. With more work and concentration it finally disappeared. Just keep working at it.

A key for you to try is to "feel" your left wrist throughout your swing so that when it breaks down at the top you know it and can correct it. Once you feel it you can concentrate on keeping it a little firmer/flatter at the top without increasing grip pressure or tension. This is best done with 3/4 swings and then working into full swings until it becomes second nature. I hope this helps.
