A bit boring with Tigers dominance? (spoiler)

...Note though that Tiger supplies a fair share of "dumbass"/fantastic shots...

I'd disagree with the first part of this statement. There is a difference between a dumbass shot (which one can't pull off) and fantastic shot(which one most likely will execute).

Example: dumbass : Mickleson @ US Open. Fantastic: Tiger - 5i out of fwy bunker over water to pin 215yds away couple years ago to seal the deal at a tournament, 5W from deep rough to put the ball on the green from 260 away or driver onto the fringe of 345yds par 4 last weekend, (fill in the blanks for the remaining 1210423092 examples ). What I'm trying to say - I haven't seen Tiger go for "fantastic" shot and fail. He knows himself, knows his game - he's just not going for "dumbass".

Which really makes you wonder...what kinda stuff could Tiger do if he didn't play the odds? I'd love to follow him around the course watching him play a casual round where he was hitting shots even he didn't know if he could pull off (like the rest of us do on the weekends

). When he hits a 220 yard shot that hooks 30 yards around some trees and rolls up on the green you know he's hit that shot 1000's of times.

Sure is, im not a Tiger fan.. Im a golf fan. Yeah he's the greatest player in the game and the way he's playing right now unless he dies or gets killed within the next 5-10 years, Jack's record will be crushed. Of course I find some of the stuff he does amazing, mainly his putting. I find myself routing for him to miss so Jim or whoever may be the next one down the list that week.. has a glimpse of hope at getting into a playoff.

Personally id say phil has the best hands on tour with the amount of spin he can put on shots from 30 yrds., so guys like him, Weirsy, John Daly and Sergio are fun to watch but Tiger just flatout mowes the competition over.

I get a kick out of watching him go shot for shot with other guys, Him and Phil at Doral was the most exciting golf i've ever seen, along with him and John Daly at the wgc last year. Personally i route for those guys not Tiger, Im Canadian so obviously i want guys like Mike weir, Stephen Ames, James Lepp(watchout for him) and Ian Leggat to win, thats why i watch golf to see guys like Mike who was 3 back at the PGA and seemed like he was gunna catch Tiger before he fell off. So without Tiger things might be just as boring as his dominance has been, it would be neat to witness him win the grandslam or beat Jack's record. but personally i just want to see someone catch him and beat him in a tourny.

    • I don't think the viewer at home can pick up on pace of play, unless the announcers mention something. The telecast has the luxury of bouncing from player to player, which ensures we the viewer always have something to watch.  I think we would notice pace of play if the camera just followed one golfer for an entire round. Or  You were actually golfing behind the slow group Or  The slow group is the last to only group left to finish the tournament.  I like the idea of having a person carrying a digital clock, following each golfer. When the golfer gets to the ball and the group in front of them has cleared they have 60 seconds or they get a penalty stroke. Maybe a second violation is a 2 stroke penalty.  Or as I have said before, every golfer wears a shock collar!!!!! at 1 min 1 second that golfer if going to drop. It will take them a good 30 second to recover, leaving them with another 30 seconds to hit the shot. The course would be littered with golfers just convulsing on fair way from an endless cycle of shocks because they cant seem to hit their ball and keep pace of play.
    • This isn't the same thing.  This is entirely a time of year thing. Not a trend.  This is the COVID year.  There are many who think the Masters viewership was actually way up. The 2024 ratings being down is only for CBS televisions. It doesn't include anyone (including me) who watched it online.
    • Ha, I didn't even notice that "NFL competition" part… I just dismissed it on face because pause has very little if any role in TV ratings.
    • Wait a second. That is a bit misleading to drag a 4 year old headline about the ratings when the Masters was delayed during the pandemic. The 2024 ratings were down but not to the extent that this headline would imply. Also, @iacas is correct. Any ratings drop has very little, or perhaps, nothing to do with pace of play.
