Hey,

Vid is of my driver swing, this club gives me the most problems and is without a doubt the worst club in my bag. My miss is a low duck hook that runs forever once it hits, if i catch it good it will be a 5-10 yrd draw. My irons are good normally with a 5 yrd draw. Any help will be appreciated thanks in advance.

I'm not really qualified to comment, I don't even really know what to say...the tempo looks great. Silky smooth. I think a lot of people will want to see a face-on shot as that may be more revealing overall (impact position). I'm curious myself. You look young, keep playing golf.

Thanks, im gonna try and get a face on vid tommorow. I think one of my bigger problems is swing plane thats why i gave a DTL view but i will get the other view up tommorow

looks like you have plenty of power. Agree, face on view would be nice. (also, if you are able to modify your video so that it plays back at 1/5 speed would be helpful).

Duck hook--does it start right, then hook start straight, then hook or start left and hook further left.

When I hit a low overdraw, I usually haven't extended enough with my legs/spine at impact enough and haven't kept my head back enough into impact. From what I can see in the video, you extend your legs well.

Some things I can clearly see--you bring the club in too fast (the club head gets behind your hands very early in your backswing) Your backswing plane early on is too flat, then you lift it up at the top. Your club is pointed well right at the top of the backswing. Then you try to drop the club back down onto plane.

I think you would see immediate improvement if you worked on the path of your clubhead, keeping it from going inside right away. It is a large reason why you are across the line at the top.

Yes, and it gets your hands in a deeper position, making it easier to consistently approach the ball from the inside.

watch Ernie Els here. See how the club head doesn't get behind his hands until after the club is parallel to the ground.
Also, notice how his shoulders rotate more vertically in the backswing, instead of around.

So holding it out more DTL when i take it away might help fix my plane

Keep in mind that there is the path that your hands go back on and the path that the clubhead goes back on. Your hand path is fine -- they move slightly inside on a nice arc. However, the clubhead path goes inside too soon -- the result of a combination of rolling your forearms/wrists and hinging the right wrist back on itself early in the backswing (VERY common fault). Ideally, you want the clubhead arc to stay inline and outside the arc of the hands during the first part of the backswing. You should feel more of the "big muscles" of the shoulders and back being used during the backswing and less of the wrists/forearms. Initially, it may feel like a bit of a power drain, but the result will be more solid, consistent contact.

A face-on view will show if your balance, downswing, and follow-through are proper.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
