I'm looking to fill in the gap between my 10.5* driver and my 19* hybrid, naturally I'm thinking about a 15* 3-wood. I'm hoping to continue my trend of getting less expensive clubs, usually by getting the hot clubs from 3/4 years ago cheap off eBay.

Right now Rock Bottom Golf has a several Adams Tight Lies #3 woods from 2008 on eBay for what looks like will be about only $35 shipped. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this wood? Forgiveness is really my only concern in my #3, I don't really plan to use it off the deck.

Opinions on this club? As far as used < $60 clubs go, how would you rate it 1 through 10?

I played the Adams TightLies 3w for quite a while and it is a very forgiving fairway wood. It is very easy to hit off of the fairway and as well as off the tee. Maybe not the same distance you'll get out of other 3 woods but for the price it is a good club.

I played a competitor's low-profile FWs for several years. One caution: When playing it off the teebox, place the ball on a tuft of grass, or a little tap-up area. If you use a tee, you may have trouble popping it up.

Yeah, that was the one downside I've read about in other reviews, it's

really bottom-weighted. Good for off the deck, bad for off the tee. I prefer as much tolerance as possible from the tee-box so I use a tee whenever I can. That doesn't work in my favor, but oh well, maybe it's not a big deal. Thanks for the feedback guys. Any more testimonials as to how it works when hit off the tee are welcome. I don't need to make my bidding decision for a couple days. For anyone else interested, the first auction of the bunch I'm watching went for $45 shipped, so the deals may not be quite as good as I'd hoped, but I'll keep watching. There's about 11 more of them going out in the next four days, at least one of them has to go for $35 shipped. I guess RockBottomGolf is clearing them out of their inventory.

As far as off the tee goes, just tee it down really low, like almost on the deck and you should be fine... Even at $45 I think that this is a good price for that wood.

That's for that assessment. By the time it gets up to $45 it's paralleling the price of a lower priced Cleveland Hi-Bore, which is also on my watch list. Not sure how to compare the two yet, though.

Is there anything substantially different in the 2008 version of the Tight Lies versus the original? I see cosmetic differences, but the clubhead looks the same and I see no distinction made between the original and the 2008 version on any club review websites. I'm guessing they just re-started manufacturing in 2008?

I believe that the original TightLies 3w was 16* and the newer ones (2008 model included) are 15*. I've never hit the Hi-Bore, but as I said before, I use to use the Adams and it was a great club...
