I play DGS300s in all my irons (have never used another type of shaft btw).

My 2 and 3 iron feel whippy to me (like a regular flex feels in mid and short irons) compared to my other irons.

So my question is this, do players ever have varying shaft flex in long irons? Say X in 2-4, S in 5-P. Has anyone done this before?

Many Thanks...

I've heard guys explain it both ways.

There's a 60-something public course pro in our area who has regular shafts for all his clubs except for stiff in Driver, 3W and 3I. He says a smooth, high-lag swing with the longer-shafted clubs will flex the shafts more than with shorter clubs.

Other golfers need the opposite, having stiff in most irons, and going soft-step stiff in 3 and 4, or maybe even R flex. If I remember right, this works for people with swing speeds on the line between R and S, for example.

I would talk to a pro or a clubfitter and see what they say. They can probably explain it more clearly than I can.

Nicklaus used to have varying flex through his bag, if I remember correctly. I think he mentioned it in one of his books.

For the irons that feel whippy, you may want to get your golf shop to measure the shaft frequency. It's possible that you have a bad shaft or two. A buddy of mine reported something similar with his 8-iron shaft, and had it measured: A flex. Considering he was on the border of X and S, no wonder it won't behaving well for him! It was an easy problem to fix, however.

Thanks guys - you helped me realize that I will never know unless I try it. So, I am going to reshaft my 2 iron to an X100 and see how it feels. If I like it then I will probably go X100's in my 3 and possibly 4 also.

Golf My Way : Nicklaus talked about his college golf coach, Bob Kepler, playing with mixed shaft flexes in his irons. Coach felt that the longer the shaft of the club, the more help the golfer needed getting the ball airborne . Nicklaus reports that Coach K had whippy shafts for 2 and 3 iron, regular for medium irons, and stiff shafts for 7 iron through wedges.

Golf My Way

When you mentioned this before I envisioned the varying flex differences set up in this way (well from less stiff to more the shorter you go). It makes total sense to me but I am going to go the other way and see what happens. ;) It may be a total failure but I don't know until I actually try it.

With whippy shafts it feels that I don't know where the club head is, I typically avoid these clubs for this reason.

With stiffer shafts in 2 and 3i, you would be following the lead of the golf pro I mentioned in my first post.

I have done this recently, as I felt my driver/3w/hybrid were too whippy, so replaced the 3W and Hybrid (with stiff shafts) and got a stiff shaft for the driver.
I have only played one round with the Driver/3W and a couple with the hybrid but the difference was clear to see from the offset, my drives are much straighter and lower with nice light fade instead of strong fade/slice. The same can be said for my 3W and hybrid so I am very happy

I am sticking with the R flex shafts in my irons for now as getting on OK with them.

Whippy or not, all irons should have the same flex. This is for shot consistency and consistent distance gap. The possible reason those 2 and 3 iron are whippy is because they are not being Tip Trimmed properly. You should check if the Frequency is right by asking to your local Clubmaker.
