I know it is extremely hard to say what to do with out seeing a swing, or a flight path of a ball, but hoping someone might have some sort of plan of attack. (I know lessons) but i am suborn. ANy how my 5i is straight, 6i slight draw, 7 has more of a 15-20 yard draw and 8i is 30-40 yard hook. Wedges and pitching and 9 are straight. Any how just wondering what a good exercise to do or a way to fix that hook i have with my 7-9 i. It really stinks as I am pin high but 30-40 yards to the right on almost all par 3s.

Does your draw start left then draw right, or start straight then draw right, or start right and draw more right?

The quick fix (and without seeing your swing) is to open your clubface more with your short irons.

Its not a snap hook, there really is no"bend" in the flight, its almost like I am aiming in that direction. but it pretty much just goes right.

If it goes straight, but right, for a lefty, it's a straight pull. See ball flight laws article here http://thesandtrap.com/playing_tips/ball_flight_laws

A pull is the result of an out to in path into the ball with a closed clubface.

The quick fix remains opening the club face with the short irons. If you keep the swing the same, you'll end up hitting a pull fade with the short irons, which is what I suspect you hit with the long irons.

As a lifelong natural draw swinger, let me share something that helped me (and I still use to straighten out shots when they draw too much.) I'll have to talk as a right hander (you lefty guys seeem to know how to translate better than I could say it the opposite way.)

A pretty famous teacher told me to straighten out the ball flight, rotate more through impact and let the club go left until you can do that and hit it straight but a little right of what you think it should be. In this game of opposites, this works for me. I'm coming from the inside, so by rotating and feeling like I take the club left through impact, the ball goes straight. The problem is you are likely pull hooking, so you have to do this until you quit flipping your hands and can swing left and have the ball go a little right but straight. (For left-handers, switch left and right.) When you get this down pat, compressing a shot is easier as well. This is really no different from the advice about hitting pitch shots when people say turn your body through the shot, or keep turning through impact, etc. Eventually it will take a handsy move out of your shots, both pitches and full shots.

Warning... It is a little scary to give this kind of advice since many OTT and flippy swingers will not really understand what it means. If you still come over the top and flip through impact, the ball flight will be worse. If you take the club back inside and under plane, and trap yourself, this kind of fix does not work well.

Very nice post thanks. Its the pull with the short irons and the long irons are pure straight

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
