Recently I replaced all graphite shafts in my hybrids with DG 300 S shafts and it is great, now the occassional hook is totally gone and I have more control for sure....... maybe lost 10 yds orso, who cares

Now I sometimes push it straight to the right, but I know this having to do with a poor release mostly.

I wonder when I am going to replace the shaft in my driver with the same steel shaft ..... anyone tried or did this, what would I loose and what would I gain ???

I would think you will lose way more than 10 yards or so. I don't know the weight of your driver shaft but the DG steel is going to be about 125 grams+. Most driver shafts are in the 60s or 70s. A heavy driver shaft is in the 80s. You just won't be able to swing it as hard so your distance will go way down. As will the trajectory. The feel of the light clubhead and heavy shaft will take some getting used to as well.

On the flip side, you might gain some consistency and accuracy, but I doubt it would be enough to compensate for the lost distance.

Maybe a heavier, or stiffer, graphite driver shaft is all you would need. That way you wouldn't have to sacrifice all the distance.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I have an old Ping i3 driver with a JZ XS steel shaft in it - I think that is stiff than a DG300S.

It works great, though it is 20 yards shorter than my i15. On the other hand, it goes straight down the pipe, and I actually carry it on some courses with monster Par 3's, or if I need to rail one on long Par 5's since I can hit it off the deck pretty well.

A buddy broke the shaft on his Titleist 905T 10.5 degree driver and gave me the head. I put a Dynamic Gold SL S300 in it because I thought:
1. It would offset the loft and keep the trajectory down.
2. It would be more stable and not hook so easily.
3. I would be a good compromise between steel stability and graphite weight.
I couldn't decide between X100 and S300 so I tipped the S300 2 inches (about the max I could get away with). I also ended up with 42.75" total length to get the swingweight within reason.

In the end for whatever reasons it doesn't hook violently but draws quite easily and flies pretty high. Maybe not getting the X100 was a mistake.

Might drive shorter than my 983K but I wouldn't be willing to commit to that. If I'm swinging well, I think the 983K is actually more stable and for sure longer. If my tempo is shot the 905T is for sure short but tends to stay in play a lot better (if that makes any sense).

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I have been hitting my drive obnoxiously high and spraying it all over the place. So what did I do today? Got a different shaft, 77g xtiff shaft cut down to 44.5" (a total Phil Mickelson move, I know.) I'll let you know how it works out tomorrow.

Okay, good comments ..... but the graphite shafts have so many variables that it (for me) is almost impossible to really figure out which shaft combines the stabillity of Steel with the added distance of Graphite, my driver SS is around 110-115 mph.

Sofar I have been using mostly S-flex stock stiff shafts in my drivers, maybe it is time to move up to X-flex .... or would it be better to go for a heavier graphite S-flex. I know about fitting, but till now I always felt that the salesclerks don't really know what they are talking about or how to interprete the numbers, etc. and the advise you get is mostly based on highest margin or sales-promotion-bonus they get from brand this or that, etc. I about have gone through the whole process of trial and error .... advise is welcome.

Just an update on the new shaft. I ended up losing about 10-15 yards but... I hit more fairways than I have ever before. I stopped hooking it and even my missed to the left were still not that bad. Ther decision is up to you, but the Xstiff 77g shaft was a fantastic move.

    • Day 54. Was in a good place last week. Yesterday’s round killed my confidence.  Full swing practice trying to get back to where I was but struggled with being tired and tense. Back to basics tomorrow.
    • Welcome back! Evolvr.com? I don't use the full extreme end of it, and that's probably dipped to 75% or so nowadays. But I use the sole more than I don't, yeah. Also… it's good to learn this shot: Middle up. Not generally outside your feet in either direction. I generally have it slightly forward of center, yeah. Short version: tip your upper body in the direction of the slope. Look at the GC3. You can find them for really good prices sometimes.
    • 3 rainouts in a row….that’s SAD Sorry, I’m in MI or I would take you up on a round.
    • Day 3:  I tried to hit a bucket at the range but an 80 year old man (he told me his age, showed me his knee replacement scars, told me all about his chronic low back pain, etc) couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mansplain to me every little thing I’m doing wrong.  Dude, it’s my third frickin day.  I know I need to twist my hips more, I know I need to keep my head/chest down and not pop up, I know I need to hit through the ball and follow through further, yada yada yada.  I know.  That’s exactly what I’m trying to work on.  How about you tell me or show me how to do those things instead of telling me to watch Iron Byron videos?  Rough day.
    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
