Next month is my birthday, and I am looking to get new irons. I am currently playing Callaway X-18's with Regular Graphite shafts....Im 6'3 and very strong so I think the fact that these irons dont fit me, is really hindering my game. Ive etched away from a 19 HI to a 6.8 HI so I have a general idea of how to get the ball in the hole.

I guess Im just looking for some feedback on the Callaway X Forged and the Nike VR Split Cavities? I have hit the AP2's and the CB's. I like the AP2's, but price might play a factor. I have also hit the CB's during a terrible point in my swing, so I dont want to base my experience off that session.

I'd place the AP2 first, followed by X Forged, VR and CBs. I think the AP2 gives a mid single-digit hdcp a good balance of forgiveness and performance.

I am the same way. I was told to give them a chance. Honestly Im more excited to get fit than anything. Im ready to play the same irons for a long time and getting my HI down to a 2 by next summer.

AP2s are really solid clubs, but they are pricey.

Yeah. Im thinking with my $200 trade in credit for my current irons, and hopefully $100 for my old driver and 3 wood that should knock a bit off my out of pocket expense....but then again, the VR's are only $535 so I could get those pretty cheap.

My favorite of the group is the X-Forged, can also probably be had the cheapest.

The only problem I am seeing is that nobody is stocking these, since the Diablo Forged irons came out. I need to get fitted.

Well, they're $399 at rockbottom. At that price you could just get them adjusted after the fact if necessary. That's a ridiculously good price.

You are right, but I have to hit them to see if I like them. Im not really a blind buyer. Plus, I need my irons at least a 1/2" if not longer. I dont want to spend $399 just to have to pay more to get them right.

I don't think the AP2s feels $600 better than the x-forged, thats for sure

At $399 new it's a solid option. If you're a standard length, a lie adjustment at most fitters isn't much more the $3-5/club.

If you're a standard length,

There lies the problem.

That's right, you mentioned you were 6'3''. Getting fit for irons does factor in length, lie, and shaft type but it also factors in grip size. Chances are at your height a standard grip won't be ideal.

Getting fit for a new set from the factory is good, but you'll get an upcharge on the PX shaft and larger grips from the MSRP for most clubs (thinking AP2 & mizuno here). It may be as much as $15 - $20 a club depending upon the standard shaft and grip. I'm in this boat (+ grip size and + length) but it's not the end of the world. My current irons were standard length/lie when I bought them slightly used. $130 later I had my favorite midsize grip installed, the lie adjusted, the lofts checked and the clubs lengthened +1/2" using a plug in the butt of the shaft. If you can find a good deal on a set with the shaft you are after, the rest are trivial expenses for a set that fits you well.

Really Im not worried about retail, since I'll be ordering them through my club pro with the shaft/grip specs from the factory with a 10% upcharge over cost. Im pretty happy about that, but I have to find the right set to order.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
