I know this probably gets asked and answered a lot, but I can never seem to remember the cause. Perhaps if I asked the question and the answers were directed at me, the info might stick. What causes me to pull my 9 and PW to the left? It seems to be a pretty consistent pull until someone is watching me to try to help at which point I start hitting it straight. Isn't that always how it goes?

I don't have an answer for you, but I have the same problem haha. hopefully I'll get some help from the flood of notifications when people try to help you out.

ACtually, today i tried to swing "around my body." i.e. don't come over the top. I try to keep my right elbow tucked on the downswing.

This is not meant to be a "smart" answer when I say "your clubface is closed at impact". If it is not your alignment and you are truly hitting a straight pull then you have a closed clubface matching with an out to in path. First I would work on setting the face a bit more open at address and hitting the balls with a square or open face. The ball will definitely start straighter for you but may cut. From there you will need to clean up the path. Look closely at things like being sure your hands are deep enough (inward enough) on the backswing and that your hips are sliding enough forward (weight forward) before "opening up" on the downswing.

when this starts happening to me, its because the ball position has snuck forward over time....

DITTO...great answer or better yet try the S&T..ha;! ha! just had to throw that in...but I agree with David 100% as for the possible reasons why you are pulling your short irons...my initial thought was that your sequence was off and that your upper body was getting through just a tad quicker then it should and therefore causing a closed club face at impact (over the top)...good luck figuring it out but I suggest getting your self videoed.

This is exactly what happens to me as well.

I'll have this problem from time to time and just concentrating on hitting a point about 3 inches in front of the ball does wonders. It's keep my shoulders and weight down through impact and helps me swing down the line. I also do the same drill when I am hitting the ball instead of hitting through the ball.

Get your lofts and lies checked and take a video of your plane - it might be too flat for a short iron. A outside-in path is nice with short irons if you're trying to hit a cut, but if you're not . . . oy vay!

Try choking up an inch or so. if you then hit em straight then the clubs don't fit you and you might want to have them bent upright a little bit. If you still pull then check your ball position and alignment.
