Hunter has gone up in my estimation - a lot. His fightback on Monday was amazing, with all that pressure, the crowds gathering, the victorious and defeated team-mates imploring him to do it - he didn't fail, he was, on that day, on that course and in front of those people, beaten. By the US Open Champion, no less, who has already demonstrated his iron constitution.

His reaction in the press conference was heart-wrenching - but it also showed me, at least, that the American players really do care about the Ryder Cup - the hype for other tournaments that may be available, it was made quite clear by Lehman, Furyk and Cink, is neither here nor there - the Ryder Cup is the global showcase and the one they want to win. If it didn't matter, Hunter wouldn't have been so upset. We have an eons-long tradition in Europe, going back to Cuchulain and the mists of legend, of respecting noble warriors, whether they're on our side or in opposition. He was great and he is welcome back - I hope he comes back soon. If he comes to play the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor, I for one shall be cheering a great fighter all the way round.
