Hello everyone. I'm new to the site, but not golf. I haven't played in a long time(over 3 years) but did take a few lessons sometime ago. I'm 27 years old, 6'2", 175 lbs, and have been lucky enough to be athletic and successful at any sport I've attempted. But golf is another story! It's for that reason that the game interests me. Anyway, enough about that. When I was playing before I had a "nice" Wal Mart set. I'm looking for some direction on a good set of clubs. Nothing too advanced or too beginner. Something I can have for a while. Doesn't need to be brand new, just quality. I've been reading this forum and have found good info. I know everyone has different opinions, but whats my best bet. When I was playing, I seemed to be very good at putting, but the rest of my game was sporadic at best. Looking forward to suggestions and getting back in the game. Thanks in advance!

welcome to the site and to the sport

as you already know there is a tonne of useful information on here

best bet - dont read too much into it as this point
spend your money on a couple more lesson to get you back into it rather than on expensive clubs

look for something that suits your eye and you can stand to look at at address - you will know when you look at it
the BST here is a great place, ebay, used club section at any local clubs or at a PGA superstore (or equivalent)
its really tough to reccomend a certain club for you

you can have a quick session on a launch monitor as well, so you at least know what shafts to be using in your driver and irons

this sport can be as expensive as you want it to be

for beginners or people new ot the game, i would reccomend spedning more money on green fees and lessons and get by with whatever for clubs

If you give us a budget we can be far more helpful.

I guess in the $250-$350. I was told by a friend of mine who golfs frequently that a nice set of used clubs can be picked up in that price range. I don't necessarily need a complete set. If I mix and match that's fine too.

hmm I would say for a beginner to look for some used Ping irons. Like G5, or G15. Check ebay but your going to want to get the right lie angle on them.

What do you need to get with that $350? Every club? Just irons?

Just irons is fine. I can mix and match for the driver, woods, wedges, and putter. I just dont wanna get a set that is too beginner or too advanced. Something I can have for a little while. I live close to the PGA learning center in PSL, Fl. Should I go there to get fitted before or after I get my gear in order?

yeah, i think my first step should be going to the PGA learning center and have them fit me. If I'm gonna do it, might as well do it right.

This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. but I would not buy clubs on the internet [ebay or otherwise] without first seeing them and hitting them. It's not to say that Ping aren't good clubs, but it's worth the extra effort to get clubs you like and have confidence in

Point well taken glbrum. It's hard to buy anything from the internet and be totally confident. I just figure that's where I'm going to find the best price when I do decide what to get. Any ideas for a good all around driver to go with the possible g5's? Seems with the few posts so far that the g5's are on the top of the short list.

I would absolutely 100%:

- Get fitted.
- Hit any clubs you consider buying. If this means going into a shop and hitting a new set of [whatever irons] then going price hunting on eBay, so be it. It instils the confidence in your purchase, safely knowing you're not going to open the box of a set bought online, then think "eew, what the hell?"

Good luck, anyway. Seeing "South Florida" makes me somewhat jealous, I lived near Ft. Lauderdale when I was around 4-7. Now, having taken up golf, I live in the home of glorious weather - the UK.

Check out a nice used set of irons from the likes of 3balls or Globalgolf.

Not sure what your swing speed is. Get the right flex in whatever you buy. 95 and under with driver should be regular flex as a rule of thumb.

As said by others: maken sure you get the correct length and lie-angle! I'm 6.3 foot myself, and I have 3/4 inch longer shafts and +3° upright lie angle. When I started, I bought a standard set (big bertha's), but my pro kept telling me it was not the correct sizing... After 3 months I went back to the shop, and complained that they didn't fit me correctly. They took over my clubs, but I had to pay a supplement for a new ( and correct ) set of irons...

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.

      Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
