Hi,

Can anyone tell me if there Hybrid/Rescue irons are any good? Long iron shots are a definite weakness of mine and this might be a good solution.

"Why not replace your hard to hit long irons with an easy to use utility club. These clubs will give you the forgiveness of a wood but with the control of an iron to create a valuable addition to any golf bag."

This looks really good: http://onlinesports.ie/product_info....lf-rescue-club

Is this true? Does anyone use one? I'm just gettting back into my golf after a break of a few years. My short game is fine but my long game is terrible. Can something like this replace the 3-5 iron, and is it worth using off the tea box if you want a better chance of a striaght shot?
Thanks

Hi,

I use a Nickent Ironwood as I had trouble with long irons, it really replaces a 2 iron though which I have never had in any iron set I have owned. I like the Nickent however I have the tendency to put a big draw hook on it when I really go after it. I am really keen to demo a Sonartec but for some reason reps don't seem to frequent Australia. I wonder why!

The best thing since sliced bread! Hybrids!

Absolutely.... I got my Driver...Hybrid (replaces 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 iron)
(16 degree... good for 200-250 yrds)..then irons.

Many different lofts out there.

I still love my 4 iron.

My recommendation would be to practice more with your long irons. Do a lot of range time with only long irons, maybe get a lesson using a 3 or 4 iron. If this is still too hard, try again. After that, maybe make the switch to hybrids. I think learning to hit long irons well can have a very positive effect on your overall swing. The jump to hybrids may just prolong poor swing habits which might not be desirable in the long run.

Hybrids are suppose to be "easy" clubs. These clubs are meant to enhance your distance, trajectory, and etc. EX: Luke donald can hit a 2iron fine, but he hits his hybrid higher, and about 15 yards further. It is true you cannot fix your swing with this, very true because hybrids are meant to be your "goto" clubs or reliable clubs from long iron range.

I think you are putting too much stock in hybrid clubs. Just because some pro players have a hybrid in their bag doesn't mean they are

supposed to be the "go to" club from long iron range. I understand the potential benefits of a hybrid over a 2-iron, but I'd be very surprised if pros start to replace 3 and 4 irons with hybrids. I'd also be surprised if better players (10 handicap or less) did the same. My concern is for the non-senior, mid to high handicapper with decent swing speed. These folks may have good short term results with changing out long irons for hybrids, but it may hinder their ability to become a better player in the long run.

I meant for pro's that have hybrid clubs, they have it because they feel confident and are comfortable, I'm not saying that they have to go hybrid, it was there choice. BTW check Jim Furyk's bag and you would be surprised. The fact is hybrid makes life easier or atleast golf and it is only the player's choice, no matter what handicap you are. And I doubt it will hinder their ability to ecome a better player, if it did, then why are the pro's using it?

You seem to be talking in circles. Or perhaps I'm not following the point you are trying to make. Now, you state, "The fact is hybrid makes life easier or atleast golf ". I disagree with this point. Personally, I do not hit hybrids better than my long irons. I have more shot making ability with my long irons and I find it easier to control the distance and trajectory. You also state, "I doubt it will hinder their ability to ecome a better player, if it did, then why are the pro's using it?" Your logic is backwards here. Pros are already as good as it gets. Any club changes or swing changes may make, at best, a fraction of a change in their stroke average. The original post on this thread was made by someone who has difficulty with long iron play and is obviously not a scratch golfer.

I'm a begginer golfer and when I learned to hit a hybrid, I put my fairway woods back in the garage. Being a begginer, I'm always in the rough. With a bit of focus, I can hit it out of some pretty bad rough at least 170yrds with my 21 deg 3-hybrid....and I'm a newbie playing since July with $100 starter set.

My next game-imporvement set will definetly have a #3 and #4 hyb in place of a 3 and 4 iron.

    • I'm good with the bunkers, and the fairways are SUPER wide. Three yards should stop a ball that isn't landing in it from rolling into the hay.
    • I'm a little behind, but I just finished listening to the episode about practicing while on vacation.  I have two vacations coming up this month that I won't be bringing golf clubs with me on, and this was perfectly timed (I'm sure I am not the only one going on vacation in June).   Especially the part about stretching.  I keep putting off adding stretching, with golf in mind, to my daily routine.  I think I'm going to use these upcoming vacations, the first of which I'm flying off to on Thursday, as a way to get into this habit.   For anyone else interested, Fit For Golf (see sidebar) has fantastic stretching routines (some of which, I think, are on their free area).  I really should get back to doing their main exercises too.  I don't have any affiliation with them beyond "satisfied customer," in case that sounds like an ad. I may end up posting in the 5 minutes thread when I do golf stretches if it's my only practice that day... as if I don't already sound like a broken mp3 with my 10-15 minutes hitting indoors part. And back to the topic:  anyone not caught up on the podcast should consider catching up and listen to that episode, especially if you're going on a non-golf vacation this summer and want some practice ideas that aren't the at-home practice routine from LSW about long bunker shots (which I am sure we all do regularly).
    • Mostly pull cuts to slices. Some random pull draw/hooks pending of I hit the toe.
    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
