Monty didn't finish first or second, won't break the top 50, and thus won't be at the Masters or the Players. Oh well.

I think he's a solid player, and underrated. But that having been said, he competed solely (primarily) on the weaker European Tour, never won a major OR a US event... and is well past his prime now.

And hey look , Paul Casey won. But in China, not the US.

Monty is/"was" more than solid ! He won European order of merit for 8 ? years on the trot ! Sadly he's on the slightly rising crest of a decline at the moment..... The old guard of Monty,Langer,Faldo,Woosnam etc etc are all passed it now in my opinion, and the new guard like Paul Casey,Ian Poulter and of course Sergio Garcia are more than starting to take over.I would agree he "probably deserves" a start spot though........

Related i guess (as he IS in),and i am,and since he won at Crooked stick in 1991,always have been a HUGE fan of John Daly.Amazing guy with sublime short game to counter his sometimes wild driving. He "seemed" to be controlling his mental powers too and i think im right in saying he has had of the greatest upward moves in the World rankings in recent times. But i dont like the look of his 18th hole at Bay Hill today - it was actually his 9th by the way.Lets hope the "dont care",possibly alchohol fuelled atitude isnt returning.

John Daly and Colin Montgomerie in one post. Never quite sure I'd see that day...

Didn't Daly get an 18 one year at #6?

18 !!!!!! - CRIPES .......... wouldnt surprise me though.

As gifted, talented, humble and generous (to charities especially) as he is, what really narks me is when he just makes the cut and then shoots 79,83 at the weekend and reportably does the last 18 holes in 2 hours 37 minutes before fighting with his pro-am partner in the car park or something equally silly.

I just wish he'd show a little more respect to the fans and himself when all's not going 100% for him.

Regarding Monty and Daly in one reply.I agree they are at opposite ends of the spectrum....Monty - methodical,a planner, makes the most of what he's got and a calculated risk-taker and despite his "grumpy" appearance gives every shot 100%.Daly - one of life's risk-takers,a gambler (yes, literally ),will go for anything, definately more talented than Monty on a per shot/per round basis but unable to keep it up for any length of time.Sure some of that due to the shots he takes on relentlessly with such short odds, and an inability to control his temper (with himself normally) or his emmosions.

I know which i pay to watch though and which i wouldnt

Yeah, John Daly did indeed take an 18 a few years back. Actually, it was in 2000 I believe. That was not up in the top 10 greatest "Daly" moments. But nonetheless, the guy just keeps bouncing back.

Now onto the topic at hand, it is a shame we won't see Colin Montgomerie at the Players Championship. I know he isn't in the top 50 world rankings, but he is definitely one of the top 50 players in the world at this moment. There is no doubt about that. I have always been a fan of him, even with all the American hatred the guy has gotten over the years. I liked his methodical game.

Would he be an alternate for next weekend by any chance? There are always a guy or two to withdraw, and I would imagine he would have to be one of the 1st alternates.

I don't think he's an alternate. They give those spots to PGA Tour members, and he ain't one.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
